Do I have to colour coordinate my books?
The quick, simple answer here is - NO!
SAVE these tips for later…
We all love a home edit colour coordinated moment - I mean, come on it’s just so pleasing to the eye! But the truth is, for many avid readers, it’s just not functional. They prefer sorting alphabetically, by author or genre. This means you’re going to cluster together a range of heights, thickness AND colours. Lucky for us, displaying books in this manner can add character to a space and infuse a level of warm, homey feelings that helps readers settle into a good read and get lost in another world.
You must be wondering - well, how do I organize my books like this and still feel like I have a “styled” shelf? Read ⬇️
1. Group your largest and/or heaviest books/series towards the bottom shelves.
2. Group your smallest books on the top shelves to balance the weight visually.
3. Group series of books by height (left to to right). This could mean the tallest to the shortest, the shortest to the tallest or short-tall-short.
4. Leave space for 1-2 items on the shelf, depending on the size and weight of the books. Use a smaller, less dense item to balance the weight of heavy, thick groups of books. Use a wide, heavy, or dense looking item next to a smaller, lighter set of books.
5. Alternatively, use a set of bookends to center the group of books and bring balance and symmetry to the shelf.
