The Climate Crisis
Dear Prime Minister,
First, my sincere congratulations on your remarkable success in revitalizing the Liberal Party and winning the recent election.
Although climate change did not have a high profile in the campaign for a myriad of reasons, among them the challenges we face regarding our sovereignty, climate change denial and economic instability, given your background, you are no doubt aware that most economists consider the carbon tax, which you scrapped due to its unpopularity, to be one of the most effective strategies in combating carbon emissions. Thanks to Pierre Poilievre’s vow to “axe the tax”, coupled by misinformation on how it worked, along with insufficient information provided when it was first introduced, it was poorly understood by the electorate. But I applaud you for retaining the industrial carbon tax .
While economic issues may have been top of mind for Canadians during the election, according to new polling data more than two thirds (67 percent) think the incoming Government should act on climate change and make protection of the environment a high priority. The increasing severity and frequency of forest fires, floods, droughts and extreme temperatures is irrefutable evidence of the crisis. And because we are at a moment in our history where U.S. imposed tariffs are forcing structural changes in the Canadian economy, we consider it imperative to include “externalities”, a euphemism used in reference to environmental costs, in any kind of cost/benefit analysis in transitioning to a new economy.
Canada has made extremely poor progress in meeting its goals since signing onto the Paris Accord in 2015. We are among the worst of the G7 countries and, according to the Executive Summary for Canada’s First Biennial Transparency Report under the Paris Agreement (2024), we keep pushing our targets further and further into the future. They have gone from 2030 to 2035 and are now at 2050. Fossil fuel subsidies continue to outstrip those for renewables. As Antonio Guterres, Secretary General of the UN stated in March of this year, “renewables are renewing economies. They are powering growth, creating jobs, lowering energy bills, and cleaning our air. And every day they become an even smarter investment”.
Like many Canadians I am counting on you, given your outstanding expertise, to lead us in the direction of a sustainable future and look forward to policies on how, collectively, we must address this increasingly urgent issue in the upcoming Throne Speech.
Best Regards
Rose Dyson Ed.D.
