Today my mom and I packed perhaps the last warm days of summer in small jars filled with the homemade jam from sun-kissed figs and the sun-soaked flavour of orange peels.
The recipe is old, simple, and reliable like the yellowed from life pages of mom’s old cookbook.

Today the sun was waving at me for a long time to convince me once again that summer doesn't necessarily end with the start of fall.

S U M M E R

spread in the quiet bosom of the mountain, the gentle whisper of the colors, the intoxicating smell of Rosa Damascena, the sweetness of the white cherry jam, and the pleasant sensations from the wisdom of the past and the flawlessness of the artist...

After a month spent in Bulgaria, surrounded by beloved people, homemade food, nostalgic sceneries, three very special birthday celebrations, and countless other favorite things, I am whole again. And I am grateful.

As Mother’s Day is just around the corner, I am sharing these special donuts I had the pleasure to photograph. DONUT HIVE created a limited edition Mother’s Day Box which they can deliver to your mother’s doorstep on May 9th.
I love this celebration very much and decided to go with a retro theme using my favourite vintage plates and black and white photos of my female ancestors. With a little bit of film grain for effect, I hope the atmosphere of the images conveys that delicate feeling of nostalgia, imperfect feminine beauty, and motherly tenderness that pour over me every Mother’s Day.

This year let's support local businesses and make Mother's Day even more beautiful https://donuthive.ca

The growing season...

These are part of our vegetable plants growing from the seeds planted by my husband who demonstrates more passion, knowledge, and enthusiasm for our garden this year than I do.

Watching these plants grow every day, I am once again amazed by the way small seeds transform to become something great – slowly, patiently, quietly, taking their time. And against the chaos of the world, while being nurtured by all the wonders from which natural life grows – sunlight, water, warmth and soil, from their small pots on the windowsill, these seedlings soon will be moved onto the garden. There they will be free to spread their way through the raising beds, then bloom as small flowers before making red tomatoes, green cucumbers and peppers for us to bring to the table.

Watching these plants change is also a reminder that we all, in fact, move forward in time, despite the seeming standstill of our lives right now. The universe is our collaborator. And somehow, the miracle of it all gives me the much-needed comfort.

I call them Easter mini eggs chocolate banana cakes. They were my son’s suggestion for this year's lockdown holiday. Easy to make, cheery and colourful, these little cakes sure brighten our humble table. To make them, I just used my favourite banana bread recipe with sour cream, added to the mix a cup of crushed mini eggs, drizzled the cakes with white chocolate glaze, and topped with additional mini eggs for garnish.

Welcoming April with these joyous Easter donuts I shot for DONUT HIVE
Even though our province is most likely to move into the next “shutdown” measures on Saturday, I hope this new month brings more colour, light, and cheerfulness to each of us.
As spring slowly unfolds here in the Northern Hemisphere, I plan on more time outside, long walks with the dog, taking care of the veggies seeds, decorating eggs, cleaning the home, making green creamy soups and serving them in my favourite spring bowls and plates, taking more photos around the neighbourhood, getting lost in the pile of books on my nightstand, being kinder to the earth, seeing the world afresh and exploring more deeply all those small everyday things that make me dwell less on stress and anxiety and make me feel truly connected and content.

A few images from my recent work for DONUT HIVE, a rebranded fully Canadian business that makes these beautiful gourmet hexagon/hive donuts. Each donut is unique and handmade with locally sourced ingredients, decorated with Callebaut chocolate and a variety of interesting toppings. Inside the hexagon is a creamy filling made without additives and food coloring.
Give a little love to DONUT HIVE, place your order online and the donuts will be delivered to your home. You can also visit the donut shop in Yorkdale Mall.
With the help of their customers, they frequently donate these pretty treats to healthcare workers, special-care facilities, and long-term care residences.

Happy International Women’s Day!

Red Tulip, inspired by one of my favourite painters.

…I think I’m one of the best painters.”
