Politics, drama, mystery, and art are among the subjects covered in the Toronto Public Library's Native Peoples Collection. The variety among its 317 titles is impressive, but many of them have one thing in common: they've been checked out. "We've noticed increased, sustained interest from TPL custo...

I keep seeing this idea going around in social media that the "real" teachers are the ones who will spend their summers planning, going to PD, etc.

But I disagree.

Teaching is an exhausting gig. It's okay to take a break in the summer. Read a book. Watch movies. Go hiking. Swim. Binge watch Stranger Things. Kick the soccer ball around with your daughter. Make a robot.

You've poured your heart and soul into this gig. You shouldn't feel guilty for resting.

I think it's a great idea to read an educational book or attend a conference. But your students also benefit from having a teacher who is well-rested and excited to be there on day one.

Free Public Libraries are something to be very thankful for!

This Toronto municipal election flyer from 1882 is a good reminder that the creation of a library was a deliberate choice of the people for the people. It was a revolutionary idea, back then: most libraries were either private, or paid for by subscription fees. The first free, tax-supported Canadian public libraries opened in 1883 in Saint John, Guelph and Toronto. Today, the Public Libraries Act helps ensure free, equitable access to public library service in Ontario. http://ow.ly/Q6AI30fGRjL
