Electric Sense

Electric Sense CIUT 89.5FM from our transmitter, or www.ciut.fm from anywhere in the world. Wednesday nights, 23:00 until midnight. Host: James Bailey

A radio programme dedicated to unusual and creative music of all sorts. Electronic, experimental, improvised, modern orchestral/chamber composition, etc. Most forms of "popular" music are eschewed unless they somehow have some relevance to other material being played and even those cases are likely to be rare. Emphasis on Canadian artists, though international friends are not ignored.

Mostly new things this week, some of them still pending. It started with the dual celli of India Gailey and Leah Plave playing a piece by the late Chris Derksen, that was followed by organ wonders from Kali Malone. Next was a constantly evolving improvisation by Allison Cameron and Scott Thomson released earlier this year by Ambiances Magnetiques. The final two pieces were from the Peterborough, ON, duo of Leak & Seaborn with additional sounds added by Spanish drummer Juan Dahmen, and it finished with Belgrade sound artist Manja Ristic.

All forthcoming or recent things this week, starting with some nice ambiance from Aidan Baker. Pianist Leung then puts her able hands to the music of Atlanta composer Alvin Singleton, followed by some jazz courtesy of Brittany Pitt, and then Daniel Field's project Beymer brought us more ambiance to round off the set. Finishing off were three (okay, and a bit of a fourth) by Eldritch Priest, A solo composition for piano then two things from his trio named after a French poet and author from the turn of the 20th century.

This was a prerecorded edition of the show, owing to the fact that I was in Montreal at the time. It features a couple of long-form pieces by William Davison, a sonic- and visual artist, and founder of Recordism, based in Toronto. The first is an edition of a podcast that ran monthly in 2017 and is made up of random one-minute segments from various Recordism audio pieces over several years. The second is from a similar monthly series in 2018, in which a single track from a found LP that has been slowed down to give a total time of approximately 30 minutes.

If you want to listen again, or if you missed it, this edition can be found at the ES page on CIUT's website, or at the Podbean archive site: https://electricsense.podbean.com/

William Davison - Stactorm Radiooo ed. 11
William Davison - The Long Play – Beatnick Fly

These two porks, plus several others, can be found at William's Bandcamp page: https://w-a-davison.bandcamp.com/

I was feeling so awful earlier in the evening that doing the show seemed very unlikely for a while, but I persevered through that and then a transit hold-up due to fire further west down the line (just the direction I needed to go). Went back home to the only reliable option available, got on me bike and peddled my arse around town.
This was a special show, the tri-annual Musicworks Magazine release ( https://www.musicworks.ca/ )
Not much I can add here that isn't in the mag, so get yerself a copy or better yet subscribe so you get the CD (the few who still play them). Interesting articles, reviews, it's a cornerstone of Canadian music journalism.

Hear it again or if you missed it, via the ES page on the CIUT website or directly at the Podbean site: https://electricsense.podbean.com/

All over the place this week, geographically, stylistically, and temporally. A soon-to-be-released single (though by whom is a mystery at the moment) honouring the 150th anniversary of the Treaty 6 signing in western Canada, then a solo saxophone piece employing some unusual extended techniques, both sides of an early '80s single by Martha and the Muffins, and a recent release by Mr. Barwin. Two rather contrary pieces follow, though I suppose one could find a connection with enough digging, and we finished with a very short excerpt from RikM.

Ex-Torontonian Andy Haas kicked things off tonight with a couple of friends playing a totally improvised piece, one of two bonus tracks from the session that resulted in May's release Messianic Time. We then went over to Lagos, Nigeria (via Berlin, Germany) for a recently released album of imaginative remixes giving new interpretations of works originally released in 2022 by Emeka Ogboh, which led us into a forthcoming release of flute music by the greatly missed Jocelyn Morlock curated by Mark McGregor. Gayle and James created and modified respectively, sounds of stones collected by Gayle in Newfoundland. Winnipeg then gave us the Tonky Honk (there should be umlauts over the o, but apparently that isn't allowed in PC-land) keyboard duo from their imminent offering "The EP" (also an umlaut on the E), and we finished in the north with Piqsiq and a track from last year's Legends release, which I didn't get to announce on-air due to time constraints.
