Electronic, experimental, improvised, modern orchestral/chamber composition, etc. Most forms of "popular" music are eschewed unless they somehow have some relevance to other material being played and even those cases are likely to be rare. Emphasis on Canadian artists, though international friends are not ignored.

Fundraising week is underway, and we're off to a fabulous start, with a fifth of our goal achieved before the official beginning! As usual, our goal is $100k, which we usually reach before the end, but we can't get there without your contributions, so go to the CIUT home page and follow the DONATE button to get us closer. The amount isn't as important as the effort; many small donations ($25 is all that's needed for a tax receipt here in Canada) can be just as effective - or even more so - as a few large ones. Anything above $89.50 includes membership in the station which allows for a vote at the annual AGM; $125 gets you one of two different, and fabulous, Runt-designed t-shirts, but $200 gets you both!! If you are able to go to $500 it allows you to programme an entire two hour slot in our schedule where you can play what you want, and any multiple thereof increments the time by two hours.
The important thing though, is making the contribution, either online (greatly preferred), by phone, or just drop by the station with a big wodge of folding stuff. It would be especially nice to hear from all the folks who have been downloading the archived editions of ES from Podbean, because that is another service we offer that adds to expenses.

It would be really nice if someone is able to come down to the station during the show to help out on the phones; though it's rare anyone calls in these days one never can tell. Email me at [email protected] to let me know.

A sad first half of the show this week, as we paid tribute to Cris Derksen, cellist and composer of Cree and Mennonite heritage, who was tragically killed is a road accident in northern Alberta last weekend. Though they had already achieved so much, there was still promise for more great things ahead. We send condolences to family, friends, and colleagues.

Also on the programme are pieces from recent releases by Jason Noble whose recent Centrediscs CD has many interesting reworkings of Newfoundland songs, stories, and music; the latest release from The Tiny Orchestra, whose enigmatic sounds never cease to entertain; and we finished with an excerpt of a track from the latest Dog Park release out of Perth, Western Australia, by Interzona, making a noisy exit indeed!

As you have no doubt noticed, we are in the ramp-up to our Spring fund-raising week starting May 25th, which means the ES edition will occur on the 27th. If you donate before the 25th, there is a special draw for a prize pack kindly donated by the folks at the Griffin Poetry Prize, which includes two tickets for their gala event, copies of the five short-listed books, and more!
Also, we have two different t-shirt designs this year, both by local artist extraordinaire Runt that are mighty nice! (available at the$120+ level)
Online donations are easiest all 'round, but if that's not your thing there are more traditional options. The important thing is the donation, not the method; even if it's just $5 in nickles. If you listen to the show, regardless of where you may be, a donation of whatever amount not only helps with the upkeep of equipment - such as our new broadcast boards - but show support for the programming. Please keep ES in your thoughts when donating!!

Some imminent releases, some further off, recent ones, and one from just over a year ago. A lovely hybrid of jazz and Indian music to start, from local duo Amrita, then some squelchy guitar from core blo77er which led into Mr. Lederer's piece for voice, wind ensemble, and electronics that also has some jazz leanings, and ending the set with more of a folk influence in a song by Pete Johnston and his ensemble Stranger Still. The last two works are both for multi-channel diffusion, with 12 (in a 7.4.1 arrangement), and 16 respectively (keen listeners may notice a segment of the Ketjak: The Ramayana Monkey Chant in the final one)

One of those shows that sort of developed a theme or two of its own. Mostly a cosmic theme, starting with Nick's Jupiter, Barry's piece has a planetary element, then Robert's wonderful reworking of an earlier work. A couple of more human-based things followed, from Susanna' trio, which was really just a duet in this case though the words were from pieces used for other pieces by poet Judith Malina, and EMF's EMV, who followed that with a return to the cosmos via a bear under the moon which in turn took us out with PIQSIQ's Giant Bear.
