One piece at a time, an Agreed Form emerges - like cosmic dust gathering into a star. Across cultures, people recognise and venerate such forms for both their structure and symbolism. An Ohio Star quilt embodies this idea: individual stitches and geometric pieces combine into a meaningful whole through craft, design and innovation.

Translating this into music proved difficult. A full three-row Ohio Star quilt contains 88 cells - too much to present as a single work. Instead, I isolated the Ohio Star itself. One musical cell lasted exactly 01:44, establishing the unit from which the star’s nine cells were realised.

Unlike the instantly visible quilt, music unfolds through time. Inspired by the Arecibo Message, the work presents the whole as a linear sequence of parts, inviting the listener to reconstruct the form. Each piece offers a different perspective on the Ohio Star: separate yet connected, revealing how a whole is created from its individual elements.

Greg Nieuwsma and Antonello Perfetto have been writing and recording together in Krakow, Poland, since 2014. Originally hailing from the US Midwest and Naples, Italy, the duo first joined forces in the experimental rock group Sawak, charting a course across five records from direct, driving rock toward open-ended avant-garde exploration.
When Sawak ran its course, their partnership pushed forward uninterrupted - first releasing music under the moniker Corticem, and later simply under their own names.

‘What Moves You?’ marks their third full-length album for Cruel Nature Records. Joined here by collaborator Tom Lis, the trio expands their sonic palette even further, channeling free-form psychedelic progressivism, deep Indian raga motifs, and an overarching thread of mysticism.

Charlie Butler is a Lanarkshire based artist who began a series of solo releases in 2021 exploring psychedelic, ambient, heavy and hypnotic sounds alongside being a member of Cody Noon, Neutraliser with Mike Vest, Mothertrucker and Head Drop. He has had work published by Weird Beard, Cruel Nature, Fuzzed Up & Astromoon, and Panurus Productions.

“Mushroom Eyes” is a collection of manipulated guitar and field recordings all captured on the artist’s phone. They aimed to achieve a more organic sound than on previous releases, capturing the detail of their surroundings in the outside world and the different atmospheres they evoke - both comforting and, at times, creepy.

“Seedhead” by Avi Engel (they/them) is a slow-burning song cycle that is part ecological threnody and part spiritual meditation. At the core of Engel’s folk-infused art songs are their voice and four-string electric guitar, joined by a tenebrous chorus of birdsong, frogsong, cello, lap steel, french horn, and bass clarinet. Musical guests include Lori Goldston (Nirvana, Earth), Jeff Bird (Cowboy Junkies), and Naomi McCarroll-Butler (Beverly Glenn-Copeland).
