The Punjab Maan Boli Bill-2025
To:
Maryam Nawaz Sharif
The Chief Minister
Government of Punjab
Lahore, Pakistan
Subject: Urgent Request to Withdraw the "Maan Boli Bill 2025"
Respected Sir/Madam,
I am writing to express deep concern regarding the proposed "Maan Boli Bill 2025," which, if enacted, may have serious implications for the preservation and promotion of the Punjabi languageāthe mother tongue of the majority population in Punjab.
It is widely perceived that the bill seeks to fragment Punjabi by promoting certain dialects as separate languages under official patronage. This move, whether intentional or otherwise, threatens the linguistic unity of the province and undermines the historical and cultural significance of Punjabi. Moreover, such policies contribute to what many regard as a state-sponsored process of Seraiki-fication and Urdu-ization, leading to the marginalization of Punjabi within its own heartland.
Punjabi has long been a cornerstone of Punjab's cultural identity, literature, and collective memory. Its systematic exclusion from official discourse and educational institutions contradicts both constitutional protections for linguistic rights and the principles of cultural preservation.
I respectfully urge the Government of Punjab to reconsider and withdraw the "Maan Boli Bill 2025" in its current form. In its place, I advocate for the introduction of a comprehensive Punjabi Language Act or a Charter for the Punjabi Language. As Punjab is the only predominantly Punjabi-speaking province in the country, it is both a constitutional and moral obligation to uphold the linguistic, legal, and cultural rights of its people. Therefore, it is imperative that the government implements effective measures to promote Punjabi in education, administration, and media. The Punjab government must assume full responsibility for safeguarding and preserving the province's linguistic heritage for future generations.
Thank you for your attention to this important matter.
