As 1 of the 120 groups guiding the CRTC - Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission’s Broadcast Act / Online Streaming Act modernization, Electronic Earth is thrilled to hear streamers will now have a 5% baseline contribution (est. $200M) of their Canadian revenue returned to fund .
Sean Young (), a Canadian producer and Electronic Earth’s president and founder, commented on the increase to available funding by saying:
“An estimated $200M increase to available funding for the creation of Canadian Content is definitely a win for the Canadian Content industry.
However, to fully modernize the legislation we need changes in how we distribute this and other available funding across the Canadian content creation industry - especially to reach and support new and emergent creators / early-stage content producers and companies.”
The Online Streaming Act, which amended the Broadcasting Act, requires the CRTC to modernize the Canadian broadcasting framework and ensure that online streaming services make meaningful contributions to Canadian and Indigenous content.
