Our thoughts and solidarity are with the seven workers who were sent to the hospital after a shocking gas explosion at a Toronto high-rise construction site this week. We understand four workers have life-threatening injuries and we await more details, with respect to the families. We also understand that those impacted are members of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters Local 27, United Association of Plumbers Local 46, and the International Brotherhood of Electric Workers Local 353.

Every worker has a right to come home to their loved ones safely. The workers on the high-rise construction site were not given that right, and we will continue to demand the provincial government provide safe workplaces for workers in Ontario. The Occupational Health and Safety Act – which requires every employer to take every precaution reasonable to protect every worker in the workplace – must be enforced.

New data on employment law prosecutions obtained by the OFL and Data Shows reveal a dramatic falloff under Ford’s Progressive Conservative government.

Doug Ford’s government laid just 150 charges against employers for serious ESA violations from 2024 - 2025 – compared to over 1,500 in 2015.

In practice, this means workers who’ve faced major employment law violations are being denied justice, while law-breaking employers get off scot-free.

“Because this government and the courts aren’t enforcing the law, they’re rewarding employers for bad behaviour and in fact punishing the workers who keep our economy going.” - Laura Spencer Walton, OFL President

While Doug Ford extends his summer with ice cream bar press conferences instead of sitting in the legislature, workers are paying the price with gutted court enforcement of their basic employment rights, according to data from the Ontario Court of Justice.

“Doug Ford works hard at distraction, and we pay the price as working people. Ontario unions fought hard for workplace laws so that you get paid, you get vacation pay, and you get overtime” - OFL president Laura Spencer Walton
