Want to show up confident and authoritative on camera? Then pay attention because we’re going to give you some media training so you can prep before your Toronto podcast recording!

Let’s start with what to do OFF-camera first.

The clothes you wear determine how people judge you. If you want to be perceived as an authority, dress for what’s relevant in your industry. For example, a blue-collar manager might wear a blue shirt and blazer, rather than just a shirt.

Next up, let’s focus on your physiology: you need a relaxed nervous system in order to show up calm and centred on camera. Take 5 deep breaths in, and if you feel like you’re still short of breath, keep focusing on taking in DEEP breaths and exhaling slowly.

Alright, let’s get you in front of the camera now. How should you sit? Upright is generally preferred for maximum professionalism, and this is the 1 pose with which you can’t go wrong.

All right now lastly, how do you speak? You’ll speak slowly, deliberately, with a calm and low voice. Focus on your message. If you’re nervous, you’ll be tempted to rush through your script or message. Don’t.

Remember, you’re allowed and encouraged to have a good time doing this, and ultimately it’ll be just like speaking to a friend or colleague.

And honestly, you’ll love recording with our Producer, you’ll have a good time, and hopefully even some fun!

If you’re recording your Toronto podcast in our studio, we suggest you pay attention to your styling. Don’t just show up with random colours. Try to coordinate yourself (and suggest your guests do too), to our set designs, so that your podcast LOOKS as good as it SOUNDS.

For our Tulum room here, we suggest dark earthy tones like tans, khaki, greens, browns, or even all-blacks to match the accents like the chair legs. We suggest AGAINST wearing neons, or any other colours here. The only exception is you might be able to get away with a deep dark denim blue. Otherwise stick to the suggested colour palette.

For our black curtains here, we suggest light colours like white, or light tan colours to complement the chairs. Alternatively you could go with complementary colours like light baby blue shades. But to avoid clashing or blending into the background, avoid dark colours.

For the couch here, you’ll want to aim for either really light matching colours (if you’re shooting up against the black curtains), like baby blues or whites. Avoid other hues to keep the styling cohesive.

Recording alone?

For our plant mirror corner here, all-white looks good, or generally light colours like chinos or light dress pants.

For our swing chair, wear earthy tones to match the plants and flowery background.

At the bartop, wear something light to stand out against the darker background shades.

And lastly, remember that you’re dressing for your AUDIENCE too. Don’t make the mistake of being underdressed.

Frequently Asked Questions about podcasts:
#1
Q How much does it cost to record a Toronto podcast in a studio?
A That depends on if you’re just renting the studio and BYOG (bringing your own gear), or is the studio including their producer to record with pro gear, and film you in 4k as well? At That Toronto Podcast Studio, renting is cheaper than hiring a producer. If you BYOG and rent a Toronto podcast studio rental for say, 2 hours, that’s $210. But we always suggest going with a producer since they take care of all the gear-related stuff!

#2
Q How much does it cost to hire a podcast producer in Toronto?
A If you get a full-service session at our Toronto podcast studio with our producer, we charge $525, with incentives for longer sessions where our price per hour with a producer drops below $200 if you book 8+ hour sessions.

#3
Q Do you need a studio for podcasting?
A No. You can film your podcast wherever you like, like in your office, at your home, on a set, Airbnb, wherever, really. But in-studio will always have the best possible controlled conditions, and is usually cheaper than renting any other kind of space out, so that’s why we recommend it.

#4
Q Are podcasts expensive to make?
A Not really. You can hire a full-service podcast studio in Toronto like That Toronto Podcast Studio, and compared to how expensive it is to acquire all the gear, learn how to use it, learn how to edit, put it all together, etc. it’s way cheaper to just hire us to produce your podcast than it is to get all the gear set up!

How to Build the Most Effective Podcast Possible
Are you tired of people scrolling past your content? Well, here’s how to fix it and record the highest quality podcast episodes in Toronto.

1 You want to start with a real problem that you solve. Mention how you solve it within the first 5 seconds to hook your viewers in.
2 Know your audience. Who are you speaking to exactly? Your tone and style should always be guided by who your audience is.
And before we continue, wanna give this video a like and a follow if you want to see more useful content like this in the future?
3 Open BIG and SMALL loops early in the conversation. Start with curiosity-driven questions at the beginning which foreshadow what you’ll cover, then make sure you payoff and close those loops by answering the questions you introduced at the beginning.
4 Ask smart, layered questions which tease pain points and insights which your audience actually CARES about.
5 Prep your guests to give sharp answers. Have them start short so you can edit that content into reels or short-form content, then have them expand their answers for the long-form.
6 Use STORY structure. Make sure you benefit from Hook > Loops > Tension > Payoff + Tease what’s next whenever you record an episode or ANY piece of content for that matter.
7 Place engagement CTAs at peak attention, since that’s when the audience is most likely to reward you with their attention.
8 Lastly, and we’re biased here since the whole reason we created our Toronto podcast studio was to help people get higher quality audio AND video recordings from a professional producer, but you should aim to record in a professional full-service podcast studio!

If you want my free in-depth guide on this, check out ThatTorontoPodcastStudio.ca/SHOP it’s normally $5 but I’ve made it FREE for a limited time.
