On Thursday, May 7 two of my favourite things - music and movement - come together at http://www.socialdisdance.ca/, created by fellow yoga person, dancer and all-round good deed doer Robin Elliott. I've crafted an exclusive hour-long mix of uplifting, invigorating and soul-soothing house (new and oldschool), classic synthpop, techno and electro for the site that will air at 10am, 1pm, and 7:30pm EST. To participate, all that's needed on your end is to visit the site and press "play" - what happens next is up to you!
Join in for a few minutes or dance your t**h off from start to end. Boogie alone, or nab some friends, set up a video chat and get down together/apart. If your current energy doesn't allow for much movement, feel free to don your headphones and sofa shimmy for a spell.
It's free to join in, and Robin has generously set things up so that contributing DJs can receive donations for their time and effort.
If being on prolonged shutdown has you feeling down, getting your body moving can go a long way in helping to stay out of the doldrums. Dancing has been proven to help alleviate depressive symptoms, improve coordination, memory and cognitive function. All those benefits aside, once you really let yourself get into it it's just plain fun.
I hope to see you out on the (virtual) dance floor!
