Winter shifts everyone’s routine, including your dog’s. Some dogs turn into snow athletes and may need a touch more food. Others move less and can easily gain extra weight. A quick conversation with your vet can help you fine-tune winter portions, so your dog stays energised without creeping weight gain.
When it is too cold or icy for long walks, bring the enrichment indoors. Short training sessions, scent games and puzzle feeders work your dog’s brain and help prevent boredom barking, chewing and restlessness.
This is also the season of hidden toxins. Antifreeze and some de-icers are extremely dangerous if ingested, and dogs can encounter them in driveways, garages and on sidewalks. Clean spills right away, store products safely and be extra diligent with post-walk paw and belly wipes.
If you ever suspect your dog has licked a chemical or suddenly seems weak, wobbly or simply “off,” treat it as urgent and call a vet. Acting quickly can save a life.
