Continuing the eco-horror trend this year, Root Rot by Saskia Nislow did not disappoint.

We head to a lake house with a family of nine grandchildren, only named by a trait such as The Liar or The Baby. Time is warped. Mushrooms ooze weird things. Everyone is just a little bit off.

I haven’t read anything like this before. Have you?

I’m not sure where we’re going with it but I’ve been obsessed with books about mushrooms and fungi lately. It’s going to be art in some way - creepy story, a watercolour or linocut series, both? All? Something.

There are just so many possibilities because mushrooms can be so many things. The health benefits. The poisonous aspect. Some glow in the dark. They talk to trees. Humans share 50% of their DNA with fungi. They can break down plastic!

So many thoughts swirling. 🍄‍🟫🍄

Ugh. Weston. I may never recover. He supports Skylar like no one else and isn’t that what we all want?

I can’t even come up with words for this one. Rose Hill has my heart. Book 3 is on the way from the library. Fingers crossed it lives up to books 1 and 2!

Lynda Barry will always inspire us. We are both working through Syllabus on and off and I think we might both own ‘Making Comics’ and ‘What It Is’ (2026 here we come!!!)

Picture This is a companion to What It Is and an extension of a workshop Barry holds. It takes you through all four seasons and ponders “Do you wish you could draw?” I love that at the start, Barry talks about realizing she can’t draw but it never stops her. Her characters of the near-sighted monkey and Marlys are so easy to relate to. The art itself (the drawing and watercolours) sucks you in and keeps you turning pages.

Never-ending creative inspiration!

Heading back to Cozy Creek for the last time (the TPL doesn’t have the other 2 books 😞) but this was a great ending.

Claire feels like such a hot mess but in the best way and Levi is a perfect match. They both pull each other out of their heads in the way we all desire. Letting someone be who they are and supporting and appreciating them for being that person.

Have you read any of the Cozy Creek series?

(And shout out to for the AMAZING linocut workshop a few weeks ago🍂)

In episode 185, Gen and Jette talk about their latest book club episode, Atmosphere by Taylor Jenkins Reid. This was Jette’s pick and our third Jenkins Reid episode!

We’ve done two previous episodes on books by Taylor Jenkins Reid - Daisy Jones and the Six (47) and The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo (99).

Atmosphere did us in! Taylor Jenkins Reid did extensive research for this book and the story takes place during the very real Space Shuttle Program at NASA in the 80s. The blend of suspense, romance, and the soul-crushing-ness. Wow…

Also - Shoutout to Sally Ride, the first woman in space, and to the Canadarm, the robotic arm that Canada developed for NASA and the Space Shuttle Program.

I breezed through the Chestnut Springs books very quickly and immediately added the first Rose Hill book to my library holds. I was not prepared. While I enjoyed (most) of Chestnut Springs - Rose Hill is currently blowing my mind!

Wild Love is about Ford Grant (the brother of Heartless’ Willa) who happens to be a billionaire and just found out he has a biological daughter (thanks to a ‘donation’ in his younger days). I honestly didn’t even care about the money. He was so lovely and sweet, and not so sweet when desired 😏.

His best friend’s sister, Rosie, comes back to town, and they pick up where they left off with their banter and bickering from when they were teens. Gee… I bet they looooove each other 🤭

If the rest of the series is this good… I may not recover.

Finally reading Beloved by Toni Morrison and I'm in love with her writing as always. Here's an early sentence that struck me:

"Sky provided the only drama, and counting on a Cincinnati horizon for life's principal joy was reckless indeed."

November's stack of books I'd like to read this month. I haven't posted a stack in a while, in part because I've been reading so many audio and ebooks this year. But I want to focus on my physical bookshelf for the end of the year.

1. Beloved by Toni Morrison
2. Catching the Big Fish by David Lynch (for an upcoming episode!)
3. The Vegetarian by Han Kang
4. Salt Fish Girl by Larissa Lai
5. Folklore 101 by Dr. Jenna Jorgensen
6. White Horse by Erika T. Wurth

I'm starting with Beloved for my other book club, but which one should I read next?

I didn't get as much reading done in October as I would have liked, but I did finally read The Haunting of Hill House by Shirely Jackson.

Just when I thought I couldn't love Shirley Jackson more. I think We Have Always Lived in the Castle is still my favourite of hers, but this one is coming in at a very close second. No one does the eerie psychology of weird, lonely girls quite like Jackson.

I bought this gorgeous copy at our favourite local spot earlier this year with the promise to myself that I would read it before the end of the year. Success! And it's one I know I'll read again and again.
