Following the outbreak of public protests in Iran, Iranian authorities have completely shut down internet access nationwide. In some areas, people are also unable to make phone calls or send text messages (SMS). This is not a technical failure, but a deliberate communications blackout aimed at isolating the population, silencing dissent, and preventing the sharing of information, videos, and evidence. This tactic has been used before in Iran, and during previous nationwide protests similar shutdowns were followed by the killing of large numbers of people in the streets, as documented by international human rights organizations. With internet and basic telecommunications cut, families cannot reach one another, people cannot call for help, and journalists cannot verify or report on events inside the country. This raises serious concerns about violence taking place away from public scrutiny. Please do not look away.
