Yesterday we welcomed our fourth foster all the way from Tennessee, Autumn!
🍂
Autumn comes with over 30 other dogs from a shelter down south that was shutting down, leaving all animals in danger of euthanasia. Luckily, all the dogs from the shelter found placement with rescues and loving foster and adoptive homes!
🍂
Autumn comes from a hoarding situation, and is working on shedding a few extra lbs, which isn’t going to be a problem because this girl LOVES her walks. She loves everyone and everything she meets and is super friendly and affectionate!
🍂
Stay tuned for more Autumn updates to learn more about this sweet girl’s personality and to find out when and where you can apply to adopt her when she’s ready!

Since starting my new job outside of my home, I’ve been spending less time with Teagan and honestly I think it’s been harder on me than her.
She gets to go for a walk and play out in the yard with her cousin and then I pick her up and she’s spoiled with affection because I missed her so much.
I truly can’t believe how much having another (trained) dog in the house has helped speed up and aid in her learning. When she first came home, she followed Jose around and did everything he did and learned the routines through repetition with him as her guide.
It will be interesting to one day see her be the guide.
To me this just illustrates the social nature of dogs; they are social/interpersonal learners and really benefit that social aspect met when learning routines and new things.
Often times we are our dog’s guides for learned behaviour, but it’s interesting to note how much they can also learn from their peers.

She’s beautiful but her modelling skills are sub-par at best.

Sometimes I look at her, perched atop my bed, of which her little body takes up two thirds, knowing on the and think “Damn girl, you are one luck dog.”
Because the truth is, not all of them get rescued.
Not even close.
Foster or adopt a shelter dog today.
They need you now more than ever.

My Teaky girl just finished her first group training session at !
I have never formally trained a dog. My last dog was already a year old when I got her, grew up in a home and had a family before, was small, a total lap dog, and extremely well behaved so I didn’t need to train her any further. Teagan is different. She’s intelligent, she’s athletic, she’s endlessly curious and wants to explore everything. She’s also a puppy who spent the first few months of her life on the street. She requires a lot more and that’s okay.

When it comes to learning and behaviour, dogs aren’t that different than humans. They are born blank slates and are taught to rules and expectations as they grow. Without this teaching, they do not inherently understand.
*
The reality is, we expect a lot from our dogs. We expect them to completely deny their nature a lot of the times (chasing squirrels, not barking to alert us of strangers, etc). They need consistent and clear training and they need to be constantly reminded of the rules as they learn them.
And they also make mistakes.
Ultimately, this training journey is not only making her more manageable for me, it is bringing us closer together, it is teaching me how I can guide her, giving her clear expectations, and allowing us to develop a relationship in which we trust each other to have each other’s best interest at heart and keep each other safe.
*
I highly recommend looking into some training classes if you never have before. There is so much to learn!

Fun facts about our funny furry friends!
Did you know that dogs only have sweat glands on their paws? That’s why it’s so important to make sure whatever gear they’re wearing to protect their toes is breathable!
How do they cool down if they don’t sweat?
They pant! That’s how!
Panting helps dogs cool down by allowing them to evaporate moisture from their tongues, nasal passages, and lungs, which in turn dissipates heat. As they breathe quickly and shallowly, air moves across moist surfaces in the body, facilitating evaporative cooling and helping lower their body temperature.
Now you know!

What’s new in Daisy’s Den? Well hold on to your leashes because I am unveiling some big still in the next few months!
I started this account because I wanted to give back to the rescue world in ways that I could using my particular set of skills. I had just lost my soul dog and was hurting and wanted an outlet that made me feel good and that helped the world somehow.
I was unemployed at the time, but have since gained full time employment, and while this will inevitably slow me down, it won’t stop me from continuing my work here.
I’m excited to launch these new features over the next little while and even more excited to hear from you and get to work!
