My Teaky girl just finished her first group training session at !
I have never formally trained a dog. My last dog was already a year old when I got her, grew up in a home and had a family before, was small, a total lap dog, and extremely well behaved so I didn’t need to train her any further. Teagan is different. She’s intelligent, she’s athletic, she’s endlessly curious and wants to explore everything. She’s also a puppy who spent the first few months of her life on the street. She requires a lot more and that’s okay.

When it comes to learning and behaviour, dogs aren’t that different than humans. They are born blank slates and are taught to rules and expectations as they grow. Without this teaching, they do not inherently understand.
*
The reality is, we expect a lot from our dogs. We expect them to completely deny their nature a lot of the times (chasing squirrels, not barking to alert us of strangers, etc). They need consistent and clear training and they need to be constantly reminded of the rules as they learn them.
And they also make mistakes.
Ultimately, this training journey is not only making her more manageable for me, it is bringing us closer together, it is teaching me how I can guide her, giving her clear expectations, and allowing us to develop a relationship in which we trust each other to have each other’s best interest at heart and keep each other safe.

I highly recommend looking into some training classes if you never have before. There is so much to learn!
