A temporary fence leans in the sun at the edge of a grassy field. Towering rectanglular menu boards form a skyline in a symmetrical patchwork of sheets of orange canvas.
A thin cloud of smoke hangs low over a slow moving crowd that shifts like leaves in a summer wind. Tiny collisions of shoulders and hips.
A man spins his laughing daughter through the air at the foot of an aluminum stage. A couple born in the 1960s - together since the 80s - watch the band as their glistening pillars of roasted corn cool in the air: half eaten and half forgotten.
Teenage boys collide chest to chest in akward pantomimes of machismo. Ritual hardness painted over tenderness and affection.
Girls, dressed in denim shorts, assemble like songbirds on a wire and take turns photographing each other for Instagram.
Long grass is trampled flat into the dry dirt beneath it. Waste bins overflow. Orange flames caress the blackened tips of endless rows of pork ribs, thick with sticky sauces tended by quick and practiced hands.

The sound and the smell of it are the same thing somehow. Each part drawn into being by the other. Each soul drawn together by the other.
