POSTER A — REST IN PEACE

In the age of disinformation where societal perceptions and expectations are molded, to a great extent, by the algorithms of social media, the 2024 Presidential Election in the United States represented a watermark of sorts, exacerbating the already existing fissures in American society. In a very real sense it represented the death of civility and democracy in the United States of America as we have known it. Racism, misogyny, intolerance, disrespect, mendacity, gaslighting, corruption, greed, criminality, gun violence, climate change denial, fascist inclinations, the suppression of dissent, fundamentalism, division and nepotism were given the green light. The people spoke. The majority of the voting electorate clearly signalled that, when push came to shove, character had absolutely no bearing on their choice of a leader — the bar is so low now it is almost touching the ground. Their preference for President — a convicted felon, a pathological liar and an adjudicated ra**st. One can only hope that the country will navigate safely through the inevitable storms ahead and may the people begin to heal the gaping divide that is tearing them apart. Dark days.

R.I.P — Rest in Peace. This poster is a metaphor for the social ruptures that current events in the United States are exacerbating. The bullets are a reference to the unrestrained gun culture that is responsible for the unnecessary deaths of so many Americans.

POSTER B — FAST FORWARD

With human knowledge in some fields such as advanced computing and genetics doubling every 12 hours the rate of change across all aspects of human endeavor will only grow exponentially. Where once the rate of progress was set to simply “play”, it is now on perpetual “fast forward”. This unstoppable acceleration brings with it unique challenges. Is the rising generation being effectively equipped to cope with the many disruptors clamouring for its attention? Will it navigate the choppy waters ahead in such a way as to ensure a smooth transition to a safer and more secure world? Our survival as a species may depend on it.

The poster attempts to illustrate the rapidity of said rate of change using a bullet train moving forward at great speed. Colours are bright, hinting at an optimistic future.

Poster Design
referencing "cancel culture"

"In a world where we repost moral outrage without the necessary due diligence, it’s important we read between the lines before we effectively “cancel” someone."
— Alexandra D’amour

"If we had a justice culture, would we even need to worry about cancel culture?"
— Amanda Marcotte

“Wokeism's impact on free speech is particularly pronounced in its tendency to enforce a rigid conformity of thought. When dissenting opinions are met with cancel culture, it fosters an environment where individuals fear expressing their true beliefs, hindering the open exchange of ideas that is essential for societal growth. It's crucial to uphold the principle that even controversial or satirical expressions, such as those found in comedy, contribute to the rich tapestry of dialogue and should not be muzzled in the name of ideological purity.”
― James William Steven Parker

Reflections on Faith

"When religion is seen as belief, the believer lives on a continuum between belief and doubt. But when religion is seen as a longing, the believer lives on the continuum between intensity and apathy."

"We live in an age where the rate of change has been colossal. Colossal. Almost every week there's some transformation of some kind, whether technological or political or scientific, whatever. And I think it's bewildering to human beings to live in a time when they can't take anything as fixed – when everything is shifting and changing all the time."
— Salman Rushdie

"The situation of the world calls to mind the following statement of ‘Abdu’l-Bahá: “Chaos and confusion are daily increasing in the world. They will attain such intensity as to render the frame of mankind unable to bear them. Then will men be awakened”.
— The Universal House of Justice

"Have hope. It will not always be so."

"Unveil"

"What I am saying is that many women who take up the veil, in any of its forms, do so without delving fully into its implications, significance or history. Their choice, even if independently made, may not be fully examined."

"But do those who choose to veil think of women in Iran, Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, and even the west, who are prosecuted, flogged, tortured or killed for not complying? This is not a freestanding choice – it can’t be."
— Yasmin Alibhai-Brown
