Think you don’t need an advocate because you should be able to handle it yourself?

I hear this from parents all the time.

And I want to challenge the idea that needing an advocate means you aren't capable of advocating for your teenager.

You ARE capable.

You know your teenager better than anyone.

But knowing your teenager and knowing how to navigate a complex education system are two completely different things.

Think about a mountain guide.

You might be perfectly capable of walking.

But if you've never climbed that particular mountain before, wouldn't it be helpful to have someone beside you who knows the terrain?

Someone who can say:

“Watch out for this.”

“Ask this question.”

“Make sure you understand that before you agree.”

That's advocacy.

It's not about fighting the school.

It's not about bulldozing.

And it's not about taking your voice away.

It's about giving you the knowledge, strategy and confidence to use your voice effectively.

**You are the expert on your teenager.**

**An advocate is the expert on navigating the terrain.**

You don't have to do both.

If you're parenting a neurodivergent teenager and feeling overwhelmed by the school system, you don't have to figure it all out alone.
