In Memoriam
J. Gary Sparks
November 27, 1948 -- March 20, 2025

Our condolences to all the people who knew and loved Gary, and those who were touched by Gary's life and work.

In a comment Gary posted to Daryl Sharp’s In Memoriam page on the Inner City Books’ blog, he said:

“When it is my time to cross over, I hope it is Daryl who meets me on the other side and helps me feel at home.”

It is very sad to say the words – Gary Sparks has indeed now crossed over. Gary brought a great warmth of eros into the world, while at the same time making a huge intellectual contribution to the collective and our understanding of Carl Jung’s still-expanding ideas.

It was hard to find the words to say how important Gary Sparks has been, and always will be, to everyone here at Inner City Books.

Our tribute to Gary is on the Inner City Books blog.

You are welcome to post your favourite memories of Gary, or the writing he did that especially resonated with you.

The books Gary published with Inner City Books were deceptively slim volumes with mighty contents:
At the Heart of Matter: Synchronicity and Jung’s Spiritual Testament (2007)
Valley of Diamonds: Adventures in Number and Time with Marie-Louise von Franz (2009)
Carl Jung and Arnold Toynbee: The Social Meaning of Inner Work (2017)
The Call of Destiny: An Introduction to Carl Jung’s Major Works (2024)
(editor) Edward F. Edinger’s Ego And Self: The Old Testament Prophets (2000)
(co-editor with Daryl Sharp) Edinger’s Science of the Soul: A Jungian Perspective (2002)

Let’s imagine that he and Daryl did meet on the other side, and that they now know the secrets of the universe. They worked hard and well to serve their vocations, helped others find their path, and created their own lives in a way that was both authentic to them and meaningful to all of us. With comfort and ease, they are communing with the infinite.

“The spirit and matter issue is something we are all being called to face. The task of our time is to make life in time and space, the relationship to physical events in life, the sacred alter of being.” – J. Gary Sparks

Join us Friday Feb. 2 for Where Do We Go From Here? A Conversation with Jungian analyst and author J. Gary Sparks. Hosted by Gary S. Bobroff and Cynthia Cavalli • Friday February 2nd, 2024
4-6pm Pacific / 7-9pm Eastern
Live via Zoom worldwide

Our conversation will begin with a look at the key turning points in Jung’s creativity life as explored in Sparks’ new book The Call of Destiny: An Introduction to Carl Jung’s Major Works (2023). From there we will explore the matter and spirit issue as reflected on by Jung and Marie-Louise von Franz. We will look at the areas of accomplishment and research that his recognition of the link between spirit and matter has opened up. These include synchronicity, psychosomatic medicine, the social function of dreams in a community, the prognostic capacity of dreams, his dialogues with Nobel laureate Wolfgang Pauli, the archetypal foundation of science (and why we should care), as well as the general theme of the convergence of Jungian psychology and quantum mechanics.
