Researchers at the University of Toronto’s School of Cities have launched Mapping Tariffs — an interactive tool showing how vulnerable each Canadian city is to U.S. tariffs. 🗺️

Key findings:

Toronto: 3,027 businesses (3.2%) and roughly 66,000 employees (4%) directly exposed

Vaughan: ~1,000 businesses (5.7%), 32,555 employees who work there (12%), and nearly 12,000 workers who live there (6.7%)

Windsor: 4.5% of businesses impacted; ~12,100 employees (11.6%)

Toronto CMA (Ajax to Milton): 7.3% of businesses potentially impacted; 200,000+ employees (13.5%)

The map has been continuously updated with each round of tariffs, most recently on Sept. 1. Researchers are currently working on a revision to reflect changes to Section 338 tariffs on alcohol and dairy.

“It’s clear in all of our analysis that this new round of tariffs basically widens and deepens the effects on Canadian cities and neighbourhoods,” said Tara Vinodrai, a professor at U of T. “Toronto is not immune from that.”

The Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) has announced a central strike voting window between Nov. 9 and 18. 🍎

ETFO represents approximately 84,000 public elementary teachers, occasional teachers, education support personnel, professional support personnel and designated early childhood educators.

The move comes days after the Ontario English Catholic Teachers’ Association confirmed it will hold a strike vote on Nov. 12 and 13. The Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation has not yet announced plans, and AEFO says next steps are “still being considered.”

Earlier this month, unions issued a joint statement saying teachers remain without contracts despite assurances from the education minister about getting a deal done before Labour Day. They criticized the Ford government’s push to centralize decision-making and move local bargaining items to central negotiations.

Education Minister Paul Calandra’s spokesperson said the province stands “ready to begin” negotiations, noting the majority of unions have gone to the Ontario Labour Relations Board to determine which issues should be negotiated centrally or locally.

“Premature strike threats do not serve the interests of students and do nothing but create unnecessary panic for parents,” the statement read. “Our focus is where it should be - getting to the table and reaching a deal that keeps students in the classroom.”

Saturday: Partly cloudy, gusty breeze, high of 19°C.

Sunday: Mostly cloudy, slight risk of an isolated morning shower, high of 20°C.

Temperatures drop slightly into the work week, with showers forecast for Wednesday and Thursday. The first day of autumn is Sept. 23.

Durham police have charged three Oshawa teens (ages 13, 15 and 16) after they allegedly drank alcohol, v**ed and harassed passengers on an eastbound GO train from Toronto. The confrontation escalated into threats and a physical assault; the group later threw a bottle toward victims at Whitby GO Station. Two of the girls were already under court-ordered conditions not to communicate with each other. All three have been released on an undertaking.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

Stanley J., a plumber from Innisfil, is celebrating a $25-million Lotto Max win after sticking with the same “lucky numbers” for years. 💰

He bought the ticket on July 24 while visiting his girlfriend, using Quick Pick numbers he’s kept since purchasing a Lotto Max ticket a few years ago. When he checked the app that night, he thought he’d won $25,000, until his girlfriend confirmed the prize was $25 million.

“We were both shocked,” he said. The reality sank in when he saw the money in his bank account, and he shouted, “Wow! I am a friggin’ millionaire!”
