FROM THE ARCHIVE: THE GREATEST NAME IN COMICS: DAREDEVIL (1941)

Before 1954, comics were largely unregulated and there were no formal ‘rules’ content. That meant stories about murder, violence and horror were more common. This copy of DAREDEVIL is a great example of that pre-code ethos.

However, after the Comic Code Authority (CCA) was adopted by the industry, crime and horror stories were more carefully scrutinized. Matter of fact, Lev Gleason’s own Crimebuster had to drop his name, with the CCA restricting the use of the word “crime.”

Early issues of Silver Streak and The Greatest Name In Comics: Daredevil feature Hi**er being trounced by the titular heroes, even before the United States had officially entered World War 2.
