Debunking "Press For Truth"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WLDdS4_Qneg

I don't fault this guy for his point of view. He's just coming at it from the wrong angle. The issue isn't the technology itself, it's what we're trying to do with it. The biological exposure to EM Radiation that we have today isn't causing the affects he's noted. It's the baseline behaviour we all have, and the ignorance of our own psychological workings that leaves us vulnerable to an unscrupulous system designed to make a profit off our participation.

I've outlined his points below and fact checked them with some basic high school science.

Point 1.
Where he talks about Radio and Microwave frequencies being dangerous. RF is the exact same as WiFi, and Radio Waves, Infra Red and even Sunlight. Specific Frequencies CAN generate heat, as with the case of Infra Red and Microwaves... HOWEVER!!!!!!!!! The exposure you get from the SUN from these types of NON-IONIZING frequencies is many orders of magnitude greater than ANY SMARTPHONE held against your head. Don't believe me, leave your smart phone in your car and roll up the windows. Now call it. Did your car heat up enough to kill your pets? No? The Sun wins!

Point 2.
Putting the phone in your pocket doesn't lead to infertility, or birth defects. Because as stated in the fricken disclaimer he read at the beginning, The device was tested against the skin of the head at maximum usage. And when it's in your pocket, it says to keep it 5 mm away from blah blah blah... that means half a centimetre. Your pockets are way more than half a centimetre away from your reproductive organs, unless you're carrying the phone in the pocket at the front of your underpants. In which case, maybe you should be infertile?

Also, the radiation they use (microwaves) is NON-IONIZING!!! That means it's not powerful enough to break chemical bonds. No Chemical damage means no damage at all.

Point 3.
The report was covering exposure to radio and microwave energy at transmitter towers and on board vessels that have massive radar antennas... You know... the kinds of things the military would have. Surprise, microwaves heat tissues containing water. That's how microwave ovens work, and that's how radar works. Same stuff... Just different applications. Point of fact. Any damage you receive from these radiations is from DOSE, not just EXPOSURE. Captain truth here is conflating the two. The DOSE of microwave radiation you would receive working in proximity to industrial signalling and transmission equipment is crazy large compared to what you would experience from your cell phone. We are EXPOSED to microwave and radio wave radiation every day. No ill effects in common public and private areas.

The part where he discusses the psychological affects, all of these are known to happen around points of increased magnetic flux, in industrial settings, and power plants. Nothing new there. Also, the power grid puts out a lot more power than your phone. DOSE! DOSE!! DOOOOSSSE!!! That's why trees get all fu**ed up under giant power line high voltage towers and substations. Also, that's why people claim higher rates of disease around these areas. We need this infrastructure, we DON'T need residential buildings placed under or around them. But again... the amount of EM Radiation these places put out is way larger than your phone or the towers it uses. Don't believe me? Try making a call next to a substation. Super crappy reception. Too much interference. Interference caused by the exact same frequencies your phone is trying to use. But I don't see this guy breaking his dick in half over having electrical service in general.

Point 4.
Where he talks about the addictive quality of smartphone activity and the seeming unending loneliness it produces. He might have a point there. BUT, and this is a big BUT, this isn't an orchestrated conspiracy, this is a side effect of the "attention economy".

We're getting really good at marketing to the base emotions of people. Things like search and discovery are addictive behaviours, that's why facebook feeds and twitter feeds are set up the way they are. They're encouraging you to interact with them. The problem is, the more you interact with these mediums, the less you socialize with people. But the more in interact with these mediums, the more likely you are to buy from them. It's marketing 101.

This is a good example of how capitalism and competition create a perfect storm of attention grabbing and time wasting. Not a conspiracy, just human nature and greed catching the technologically savvy "Millennials" in the crossfire. I know this for a fact, as this is my job. I'm a marketer. I'm always looking for ways to allow Brands to engage with their customers... I wish I could say, I had a solution, but there isn't one. Just be aware that everything you see in social media, that isn't from a direct friend, is trying to sell you something you don't need. And lots of times they aren't looking for money, just your time. In return you get a slight endorphin rush with every click you make, leaving you hollow and unfulfilled, looking for the next bump.

I would encourage everyone to pick up a book, or consult an actual expert before posting or sharing this kind of mislead nonsense. Be aware of who you are, and how our society is hacking your social life. Don't pander to this level of ignorant fear mongering. That's your first line of defence.

Had the opportunity to view the Eclipse at work yesterday. I was breaking out the dorky MacGyver pinhole camera skills when some kind soul handed me a free pair of Eclipse glasses. Not content to be outdone by "big eclipse glasses", I fashioned a rudimentary telescope using a pen and some water droplets. I took this picture with my phone and some factory eclipse glasses, and a homemade hydro-telescope made with stationary and 40 years of rage.
