Ontario Premier Doug Ford says he didn’t know his party allegedly sent someone to Jamaica to follow former Liberal leader Bonnie Crombie during her private vacation.

Ford says he wouldn’t have done it—but his response has sparked a bigger question: How can something this serious happen inside a major political party without the leader knowing?

Opposition research is one thing. Following a political opponent overseas during a private vacation is something Canadians have every right to question.

If public trust matters, Canadians deserve transparency: Who approved it? Who paid for it? What exactly was the person instructed to do? And who was ultimately responsible?
