Every year deciding between homeschool or public school weighs heavy on me. It’s not something I take lightly weighing the pros and cons of each.

This year is the first year that a con on the list of public school went from being a hypothetical possibility to an experienced reality. A tragedy.

This was just supposed to be a “con”. A collumn on a piece of paper… It was just a hypothetical. Something I would reassure myself was far fetched and unlikely to happen. Not a good enough reason to keep them home.

Con- Schools are vulnerable places, that are continually being targeted. Possible school attack, school shooting, other forms of abuse.

It’s supposed to be a worry, a fear. Something far fetched, not something that feels way heavier on the scale this year.

I am devastated and don’t usually share the process of me deciding to homeschool or enroll, but this year after the tragedy just 6 months ago, the descision is so much harder.

While In the past my pro and con list would point to enrolling them this year, I just can’t get past the tragedy. I can’t justify all the benefits, for the risks… it didn’t used to be this way… did it?

The children lost, actually gone-my sons own friends and peers. Not to mention how broken the school system is. The teachers care and try their best but when their resources are cut and limited so are the futures of our children.

All of the things I want my children to experience in school are being removed. The things that are left? Make it hard to commit to the challenges of navigating a school year with neurodivergent children.

I just wish that “school” could be a safe warm, comfortable place for all. I really do, it would make this decision so much easier. 😭😭😭 the conditions we send our children into every day are deplorable by the standards in which a child should be raised.

I understand and I know and I hate that people have no choice but to enroll their kids to go to work to pay bills that barely keep things stable for the kids.

Life is so broken 😭😭😭
