Expecting Your Second Child
Hi it is Sherri Phillips, owner of Baby Helping Hands, Postpartum Doula and Registered Early Childhood Educator.
Today is my son’s 17th birthday and on this day I reflect on the journey to his birth and our postpartum journey.
There is six years between my son and his sister. Those where six very long years of trying to get pregnant again which included multiple miscarriages.
I was 39 when I had my son and my OB kept saying it could be your age. I was not willing to accept that as an answer. During my pregnancy I was on pins and needles and then the day came a week earlier than expected but he was finally here.
We were so excited, and his sister was thrilled. But postpartum was hard. Raising two children was so different then just having one. Also, I felt terrible when I had moments of him not sleeping well and thinking what was I thinking having a baby at my age. I wish I had known about postpartum doulas. I needed a cheerleader to say, “You are doing great”, “How you are feeling is okay” and “Together we will get you through the challenging times”.
With my mom and sister on speed dial, a husband who was willing to support me anyway he could, and my community drop-in at Oak Park Neighbourhood Centre in Oakville, I made it through the hard times and have amazing memories.
Don’t do it alone build your village of support before baby comes.
