2015 Canadian Flag 50th Anniversary Quarter

In 2015, the Royal Canadian Mint released this special colored quarter to celebrate 50 years of the Canadian flag. Few symbols unite Canadians like the red maple leaf representing pride, valor, freedom, and peace.

Designed by Nova Scotia artist Bonnie Ross, the reverse features 50 children, each representing one year of the flag’s history, reaching toward Canada’s future. With a mintage of 6.25 million, this coin was issued in both colored and non-colored versions, quickly becoming a favorite among collectors.

Though not rare, the 2015 Flag Quarter holds deep meaning for Canadians and remains a cherished piece of modern commemorative coinage.

2015 Canadian Remembrance Poppy Quarter – A Symbol of Honour

This beautiful 25-cent coloured coin was released in 2015 to honour the universal symbol of remembrance: the poppy. Designed by Tony Bianco, the reverse features a vibrant red poppy surrounded by smaller blossoms, with the words REMEMBER – SOUVENIR engraved at the bottom.

With a mintage of 6.25 million coloured and 6.25 million uncoloured coins, it remains one of Canada’s most meaningful commemorative quarters. A lasting tribute to the soldiers who gave their lives, inspired by John McCrae’s famous In Flanders Fields.

1973 Large Bust Mountie Quarter – How to Spot This Rare Variety

In 1973, Canada released a special one-year-only quarter to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the North-West Mounted Police, later known as the RCMP. The reverse design by Walter Ott shows a mounted officer carrying a lance an iconic image that millions of Canadians saved as a keepsake.

But here’s the twist: there are two obverse varieties of this coin, and one is much rarer. Almost all 1973 quarters were struck with the new Small Bust obverse, created to improve striking quality. However, a small number fewer than 10,000 coins were mistakenly struck with the Large Bust obverse from 1972, making the Large Bust Mountie Quarter a highly collectible mule variety.

How to tell the difference:

Small Bust (common):
• 120 beads around the rim
• Beads sit farther from the rim
• The “A” in REGINA points between two beads

Large Bust (rare):
• 132 beads around the rim
• Beads sit closer to the rim
• The “A” in REGINA points directly at a bead

Because of its tiny population, the Large Bust 1973 Mountie Quarter is one of the most sought-after modern Canadian quarter varieties, often selling for hundreds of dollars in high grade.

2017 Hope for a Green Future Colored Quarter – Canada 150 Commemorative

Issued in 2017 to celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary, this special 25-cent coin is titled “Hope for a Green Future.” What makes it even more remarkable is that it was designed by Joelle Wong at just 8 years old.

Her artwork symbolizes how Canadians are all connected in protecting nature. The design features a turtle, bird, and beaver, decorated with Indigenous-inspired patterns, all reaching toward a growing plant held in human hands — a powerful image of renewal and responsibility.

With its bright colours and deep meaning, this quarter stands out as one of the most unique entries in the Canada 150 commemorative series.

💬 Do you still have this coin in your collection, or remember finding one in your change back in 2017?
