What a morning! I had just set off in my kayak when I came across this pair of beauties. They were sleeping at first, then became aware of but unperturbed by my presence. Just me and the loons. The most peaceful way to start the day ❤️

A fearless Red-winged Blackbird fledgling.

✅ Fledglings often spend time on the ground as they learn to fly and forage. Having just left the nest, they also may not yet have developed strong escape instincts.

✅ It’s common to assume a grounded fledgling is injured or orphaned—but usually, the parents are nearby, keeping watch and continuing to feed them.

✅ If you see a grounded fledgling, please keep a respectful distance (this was shot with a 400 mm lens and cropped)
