In just 56 days, on September 22nd, nomination day for Alberta’s 2025 municipal elections will arrive. That date should be triggering excitement, fierce debate, and perhaps even some spirited lawn sign wars. Instead, the feeling across this province is eerily quiet, subdued, almost indifferent. And that should alarm every single Albertan who cares even remotely about the communities we live in.

Over the past few months, I’ve had conversations with numerous municipal leaders — those planning to run again, those stepping away, and even some who haven’t quite decided yet. One theme has been echoed time and time again, in coffee shops, on the phone, and behind closed doors: there is a stunning lack of interest in this year’s municipal election. Not just from voters, but from potential candidates themselves.

For over five years, residents near the Donkin coal mine have been battling an invisible but relentless intruder: a low-frequency industrial hum, emanating from massive ventilation fans—fans that have been running day and night, audible up to seven kilometers away.

It’s been described as “torture,” “unbearable,” and “inescapable.” People are sleeping in basements, suffering from fatigue, anxiety, and worse. Some have left their homes entirely. Yet the noise continues, and the silence from authorities has been even louder.

Joining us today is Cat Fergusson, a leading voice from the Cow Bay Environmental Coalition, who has been at the forefront of this grassroots fight. We’ll ask: What has the municipality done—or failed to do? What does environmental justice look like at the local level? And what happens when a community’s right to health and peace collides with industrial profit?

Today we’re diving into one of the most important—yet often overlooked—questions in local governance: Are we getting good value for our municipal tax dollars?

A new report from the Fraser Institute has brought this question into sharp focus. The study, The Expanding Finances of Local Governments in Canada, reveals that municipal government spending across the country has hit near-record levels in recent years.

We’re joined by Jake Fuss, Director of Fiscal Studies at the Fraser Institute. Jake is here to unpack the findings, challenge prevailing narratives about municipal finances, and help us better understand what’s driving local government growth—and what it means for taxpayers, policymakers, and the future of our cities.

Across the province of Alberta, candidates are stepping forward with visions for stronger communities, smarter growth, and more responsive local government.

Today, we continue our coverage with a conversation that’s especially timely for Edmonton voters.

Joining us in this episode is Andrew Knack — a familiar name at City Hall, and now a candidate for mayor. Today, we sit down with Andrew to talk about why he’s stepping into the mayoral race, what he sees as the most pressing challenges facing Edmonton, and how he hopes to lead the city into its next chapter.
