Now is the moment to honour the rich history, heritage, and diversity of the First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples.

Did You Know: John Ware, legendary cowhand and rancher

John Ware began his life enslaved, and he went on to become a cowboy, rancher, and rodeo star. John distinguished himself as one of the best cowboys in Western Canadian history.

Born in Tennessee into slavery, there is evidence that he grew up on a small ranch. He was 20 years old when slavery was abolished in the USA and he became a free man.

Ware’s skills set him apart among cowboys. In 1882, Ware met a man named Tom Lynch who invited him to assist in the transportation of more than 3000 cattle from Idaho into the Alberta foothills, for the North-West Cattle Company (known as the Bar-U).

He was captivated by the Alberta Rocky Mountain scenery and decided to stay.

Edmonton's Early Pioneers is a collection of fascinating vignettes about the incredible history of Edmonton, from the Forts to the present!

Alberta's Agriculture Pioneers features the farming history of Alberta from the earliest gardens to the industrial farms of today!

And, for the more discerning collectors, we have divided our usual Ranches and Rodeos calendar into two separate editions: Ranches and Cowboys OR Rodeos and Stampedes.

Soul of Canada has a new K-Days update! Our booth will be located in Hall G on Memory Lane, surrounded by the historical exhibit we have been working hard to create in partnership with Explore Edmonton Corporation. We are currently searching for volunteers to serve as historical interpreters and booth staff, so please contact us if you love to speak about history! We will also have brand new History Showcases for display and sale at the booth, including frames, calendars, and cards.

We are excited to announce our participation in the Canadian Land Reclamation Association Alberta Chapter 2023 AGM and Conference at the Edmonton Expo Centre from February 22-24!
