Chill the Rules and the Reds.

Admittedly I've been hard on NS red wines in the past. I still am on those wineries who seek to produce big, oak-laden wines not conducive to our climate. However, when it comes to summer, Nova Scotia's delicate, fresh, tangy reds can be perfect for putting in cooler of ice and having as a refreshing alternative to hot climate alternatives.

The other place in the world where I seek fresh, zingy, lively red wines is Italy.

In this week's Coast I call out Fauna from Lightfoot & Wolfville, Benjamin Bridge Wild Rock Red, and a number of Italian wines represented in the market by the likes of Innovative Beverages Danny Hewitt (Terrescure Bernadeschi Governo available at Westside, Harvest)), Viking Imports Kristján Kristjánsson (La Spinona available at Westside, Harvest), Invino Veritas Karen Nause (Tornatore Etna Rosso, available at Bishop's Cellar), Colin G Boyd (Castello Bossi Chianti Classico), Bishop's Cellar (Chiarli Vecchi Lambrusco) and more....

Weather is turning a little cloudy tomorrow, but a good movie and some popcorn always makes things sunny. And if the sun doesn't come out there is always meatballs.

We have amazing wines being presented throughout Gusto! Italian Festival presented by RBC and Queen's Marque. Thanks to partners like Kevin Schwenkerof Wine Horizons there will be incredible wines from the likes of Sting (yes, of Police fame) with his Il Palagio estate in Tuscany, Uggiano Chianti Classico, and the incredible Brunello di Montalcino wines of Donatella Cinelli Colombini.

The Grand Tasting takes place on June 28 at the Italian Canadian Cultural Association of Nova Scotia on Agricola Street in Halifax. The Master Tastings take place on June 29 at The Post Office.

For Gusto! Italian Festival our mandate is to work collaboratively with the Italian community. Italian Canadian Cultural Association of NS and its board have been supportive our launch. Love Halifax's small but might Italian community.

Who's excited for movie nights at the Queen's Marque? Gusto! Italian Festival (www.hfxitalianfest.ca) presented by RBC has 5 movies over the week starting with La Dolce Vita on Thursday, June 26, The Big Night on Friday, June 27, Pinocchio and The Talented Mr. Ripley on June 28 and The Truffle Hunters on June 29.
