Our practicum student captured some of the absolute magic back in April that was our first Songwriter’s RoundHouse - where stories meet strings and the songs just hit different.

The Songwriter’s RoundHouse — a Nashville-style round with West Coast soul.

🌿 A cozy room full of candles, courage & heartfelt humour and connection.

This is what it felt like in April at the show. The audience was as much a part of it as were the artists. And we all had a great time.

Hosted at the legendary HippoSonic Recording Studios, this intimate songwriting camp will bring together artists, producers, and songwriters alike for two days of co-writing sessions, community, and inspiration - capped off with a 10 hour studio demo day and a Sunday night sound healing experience to ground all that creative magic.

The beauty of this work of heArt is in the not-knowing. We come to the songwriter's circle not to be perfect, but to be present. To stay curious. To keep listening. You can never know the true value of something until you experience it fully. What a night! The first ever Songwriters RoundHouse is in the books and my heart is so full.

Thank you to everyone who showed up, leaned in, laughed, cried, sang with us, and shared that magic at Zameen Art House on Granville Island. This wasn’t just a show, it was a sacred circle. A reminder of how powerful songs and stories can be when we sit in them together.

To the incredible Michael Averill and Francis Baptiste, thank you for your vulnerability, your music, and your spirit. To Diane Barbarash, who couldn’t join us due to illness, we missed you and send you so much healing love.

And yes, life had a plot twist, and I stepped into the round to share my own stories for the first time in a long while. I’m so glad that I did. (Terrified? Sure. But glad I did and a reminder that leaders need to practice what they preach.)

The feedback has been overwhelming in the best way, from the warmth in the room to the hugs and kind messages that followed. This is exactly what I had hoped the RoundHouse would be, a space for community, connection, and creativity that lingers long after the last note.

Thank you for being part of this and a huge thanks to my team for all their support in making this night a great success. Let’s do it again sometime!

✨️ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Francis Baptiste✨️

Francis Baptiste is an Indigenous songwriter who covers topics of cultural reclamation, addiction, and fatherhood. CBC has said "Francis Baptiste is unsparingly candid." Of the single Lazy Lake, CBC called it "lushly hypnotic."

Baptiste currently has two full length albums out on all platforms, with a third coming out Summer 2025. In February he is releasing Senklip, the Trickster on vinyl.

The Georgia Straight says: "Baptiste packs a lot of perspective into his music, sung in a mix of English and Nsyilxcən. His vulnerable folk rock songs about addiction and self-discovery are bluesy, bruised, and blossoming."

We are so excited to invite Francis to join us on stage at The Songwriter's RoundHouse happening on Granville Island at Zameen Art House on April 5th. We can't wait to hear all his stories.

Michael is an insightful and captivating speaker and songwriter, renowned for his ability to foster deep connections and inspire creativity wherever he goes. With over 20 years as a touring artist and storyteller across four continents—including a remarkable 4,000-mile walk across Canada—Michael blends his experiences as a musician and community builder to help those he engages to forge meaningful bonds and foster environments where every voice is valued.

Onstage, Michael’s performance versatility ranges from southern lap steel slide blues, to intricate finger-style folk, to driving shanties about mismatched socks. He combines buttery guitar licks and philosophical wordplay into the perfect blend of playful and sensitive, and leads listeners through the ups and downs of life with a smile and curious heart.
