🚨 India’s First Transgender Clinics Shut Down After USAID Funding Freeze

India’s first three Mitr Clinics—in Hyderabad, Kalyan, and Pune—closed last month following a stop-work order from USAID, disrupting services for nearly 5,000 people.

The clinics, run primarily by transgender doctors and staff, offered hormone therapy, mental health counselling, HIV/STD support, legal aid, and general medical care.

The freeze stems from U.S. President Donald Trump’s 90-day pause on foreign aid, part of his "America First" policy. Each clinic required ₹3 million ($34,338) annually to operate and employed about eight people. Efforts are now underway to find alternate funding.
