What does authentic care look like in men's lives today?

Voice Male Magazine is seeking submissions for our Spring 2026 issue focused on Care—and we want stories that surprise us with fresh perspectives on how care shows up in boys' and men's experiences.

We're looking for writing that bridges research and frontline activism, but skips the jargon. Whether you're sharing personal experiences, professional insights, or community observations, your lived experience counts as expertise.

We welcome diverse formats:
🧡 Articles and personal essays
🧡 Opinion pieces that challenge assumptions
🧡 "How to" guides for practical change
🧡 Reviews of relevant media
🧡 Photo essays that tell visual stories

Topics that energize us: Gender justice issues, men's role in equity work, mental and emotional health, dismantling patriarchy, authentic relationships, and personal transformation stories.

Submission specs: 750-2,000 words, accessible language, no academic citations required. We're looking for submissions that energize the engaged, inspire the aspiring, and nudge fence-sitters toward action.

Ready to contribute to this important conversation about care, masculinity, and showing up authentically? Submit to Voice Male magazine and help redefine what care means in men's lives 👉🏻 https://voicemale.ca/pages/submit-your-writing

A Gift That Creates Ripples
When you gift a Voice Male membership, you're not just giving magazine subscriptions, discounts, and community access – you're investing in the relationships and support systems that help young people thrive.

Every membership supports NGM Alliance, our free online community where middle and high school students build the meaningful connections, skills, and sense of belonging that foster resilience and support mental health.

Young people have incredible capacity for growth, empathy, and positive change when given the right support. Your gift helps create the conditions where they can flourish.

This season, give a gift that builds a future where boys and men feel less pain, and cause less harm.

From this week's edition of Voice Male Weekly:

15 people were killed and over 40 injured when two gunmen opened fire on a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach in Sydney.

We're writing this during a season when many observe sacred traditions that bring communities together. These moments of celebration and reflection remind us of our shared humanity – which makes attacks on them feel especially devastating.

When talking about violent extremism, there's one pattern we can't ignore: over 95% of mass violence globally is committed by men. This isn't unique to any one faith or political movement. Across contexts, men are more likely to be radicalized through exploitation of their struggles and feelings of alienation – something felt by so many men and boys.

There's a shared ideology of patriarchal masculinity underneath it all. And it's a missing link in our conversations about violence prevention.

So how do we respond?

We created our course Making Sense of Senseless Violence to help people understand these connections and shift toward primary prevention. It covers the masculinity piece (the boys are not alright), intersectionality (the roots of extremism matter), and action (how we respond).

We're making this course FREE until the end of the year. Please take it, share it widely, and help us move the conversation from reaction to prevention.

"One of the hardest moments from when Next Gen Men directly ran after-school programs was always around the end of our 10 weeks together: we would inevitably get the question, “Will you be back next year?”

The best answer we could usually give was: “We hope so.”

By contrast, one of the most exciting things about handing the free Next Gen Manual directly to schools is the possibility for impactful programming year after year—whether through an embedded educator or youth worker, or through the empowering possibility of engaging teenage boys—NGM alumni, per se—as mentors for their younger peers."

"As I learned from Mark Greene and others in the men’s wellness world, you can do a lot when you call men in—even as you still have to call out bad behavior and choices. This isn’t a pass to behave badly. But I’ve learned that some framings shut down the conversation before it begins."

"While it is tempting to brush such phrases off as banter, as the natural result of fans getting heated in a competitive environment—and especially one where alcohol is involved—I think it is time we interrogated why the impulse in heated moments is one of misogyny."

The shift we explored there? It's accelerating faster than we imagined.

Maryland's Wes Moore told his legislature: "On every single indicator we care about, young men and boys are falling off." He directed his entire administration to develop solutions. California's Gavin Newsom issued an executive order addressing rising suicides and disconnection among young men, then launched a challenge for 10,000 mentors.

Here in Canada, Manitoba allocated $811,000 to five programs engaging men and boys to prevent gender-based violence. The Federal government convened a roundtable on the mental health of young men and boys.

Women and Gender Equality Canada .fegc has featured NGM's work in their national newsletter, highlighting how we foster online communities that challenge harmful norms. Our own Executive Director testified to the House of Commons Standing Committee on the Status of Women.

This is the moment we've been working toward – when systems start shifting alongside stories. When policy-makers recognize what communities have known: boys and men need support, not just scrutiny.

The question now isn't whether this matters, but whether we can sustain it. So as we head into 2026, let's keep building a future where boys and men feel less pain, and cause less harm.

Jonathon had the pleasure of spending his Saturday with Gillette and Lay-Up, delivering professional development for basketball coaches. The session - Bigger Than Basketball - helped coaches move beyond Xs and Os to become the kind of mentors who positively shape who young athletes become, not just how they play.

"Imagine building a deck, and all you had was a hammer. It’d be a pretty wonky-looking thing since you weren’t able to cut the boards, sand them, or all of the other myriad things needed to bring it together.

The best case scenario is if you bought all the boards at the perfect size, you might be able to just hammer nails and make something functional.

It sure would be great if you had more tools though...

Now imagine you need to do some work under the hood of your car, and you still only have a hammer. You’d probably think to yourself, “this is f*cked.” Not only do you not have enough tools, you definitely don’t have the right tools for the job.

What if that hammer you’re holding represents an emotion? And that one emotion that you’re given to solve the complex situations life throws at you is anger?"

If you're working to prevent gender-based violence and support healthy relationships, you know the challenge: how do you actually reach youth, parents, and caregivers in ways that work for their lives?

Join this free webinar on December 10th (10 - 11:30am MT), to hear from our Manager of Youth Programs and Partnerships, Stephanie Wright, as she shares how Next Gen Men engages boys though our Discord community - a digital space designed for connection and positive development that meets young people where they already are.

You'll also hear from ConnectED Parents on using text messaging and AI to support caregivers, and the Centre for Sexuality (CFS - Sexual Health Centre) on reaching 2SLGBTQ+ youth and their families through e-learning.

From this week's edition of Voice Male Weekly:

December is when everything slows: emails end with “let’s circle back in the new year,” meetings get postponed, big conversations get shelved. For some men, that slowdown isn’t rest – it’s more silence.

We spent Movember talking about men’s mental health. December is when that talk needs to turn into action, right when collective energy says, “deal with it later.”

Shorter days, heavier expectations – show up, give generously, perform joy.

For men already feeling alone, the gap between holiday cheer and how they actually feel inside widens. Distractions disappear. And the cultural permission to disengage means the men least likely to ask for help are even less likely to reach out.

When everyone else checks out, let's check in.

Looking out for the boys and men in your life doesn’t require grand gestures. It’s noticing when “I’m fine” doesn’t match what you see. It’s naming that holidays can be hard. It’s checking in now, not in January.
