One of the unexpected life lessons I’ve learned since moving to Canada came from something as simple as waiting for the bus.
Yes, standing at the bus stop, sometimes in the cold, sometimes under the rain, watching the time tick, has taught me patience on a deep level. You see, Canada operates on systems: bus times, appointments, legal procedures, school timetables and these systems aren’t just rules; they are character shapers.
In Nigeria, we often move fast, hustle hard, and improvise solutions. But here, you learn to wait, to follow the process, to respect order and in that, you start to grow in virtues you didn’t even know you needed:
Patience when the bus is delayed
Kindness when someone needs a seat before you
Gratitude when the driver greets you with a smile
Empathy when you see an elderly person waiting beside you
Respect for systems that serve everyone equally
A well-planned society is more than good roads and working buses. It is about how those systems shape people’s attitudes, mindset, and quality of life. Living here has helped me become more emotionally intelligent, responsible, and hopeful.
If you’re planning to move to Canada, have hope. There’s space here for your dreams, but prepare wisely.
Here are a few things you should sort out while still in Nigeria:
Get your international passport and valid ID documents ready
Write and pass your English proficiency tests (like IELTS if needed)
Gather your academic transcripts and certificates
Save up. Canada is rewarding, but it is not cheap at the start
Get mentally prepared to start afresh with humility, curiosity, and a teachable spirit
You won’t just study or work here. You will transform. And the journey starts not when your flight lands, but when you start preparing intentionally from back home.
There’s something beautiful waiting for you here, but be ready to grow into it. 🇨🇦🇨🇦🍁
