This is one of my favourite lessons to work through! When I teach students 2 and three syllable words they need practice dividing words by syllable for accurate reading. When you read by chunks, it sometimes sounds really silly until you blend it all together!

To play up that silliness, in this exercise we're creating our own silly words by breaking apart bigger words into syllables and then rebuilding new nonsense words. This gives students lots of practice with unfamiliar word parts, and they love having a chance to create something original!

Today I'm sharing some photos of the words my students came up with.

Have you ever wondered why some short words ends with a doubled letter and some don't? For example, why does shelf have one f but fluff gets two?

The reason is more simple than you might think! In one syllable words that have a /f/, /l/, /s/, or /z/ sound right after a short vowel, we double the final consonant!

Practicing word endings that have a sneaky, silent letter is more fun with velcro and colourful cards!

This is an easy way to get students thinking about when we need the long spelling and when we can Throw It Out!

In the Pumpkin Patch is perfectly fall themed. I like to start off the year with reviewing or teaching short vowel words, so this one always matches the season!

When do we use a TCH word ending? There are three things to remember:

1. We only use it if the /ch/ sound comes immediately after the vowel.
2. We only use it after a short vowel (no vowel teams!)
3. We only use it in one syllable words (unless we're just adding a suffix, like "patching").

Once I've taught the new concept, it's time to practice! We take turns flipping over cards from In the Pumpkin Patch and looking for fall themed hidden pictures. If you get a ghost you have to discard all of your pumpkins, and whoever has the most pumpkins at the end is the winner!
