Here’s a Throwback Thursday for you… Ten years ago tonight, we interviewed Greg Sestero at The Rio Theatre in Vancouver. Never could we have imagined the cinematic journey that encounter would set into motion. Fast forward a year to the end of 2016, and we started principal photography on ‘Best F(r)iends Volume 1’, reuniting Greg and Tommy Wiseau on-screen for the first time since their 2003 cult classic ‘The Room’. A year later, and we were wrapping production on ‘Best F(r)iends Volume 2’. And just a few short years after that, we found ourselves collaborating anew with Greg and his ‘Best F(r)iends Volume 2’ co-star Rick Edwards on our recent feature ‘The Founder Effect’, for which we returned to the Rio to film several scenes (shoutout to Corinne Lea). Talk about a full circle saga!

It’s amazing to look back on a decade of creative exploration and adventure. From the deserts of Nevada to the bustle of London, with combined screenings at nearly 100 film festivals and hundreds of cinemas across dozens of countries, we’ve made some incredible memories, collaborated with some amazing and talented cast and crew, and grown as filmmakers and artists along the way. And that sequence of events all started with a simple… “Oh, hi Mark!”. 🥄

Location, Location, Location: The Power of Location

Want a commercial video with that true cinematic feel? It doesn't start with the camera—it starts with the location.

At Roguescots, we know that finding the perfect spot is the most critical step in pre-production. A great location isn't just a backdrop; it's a vital element that tells your brand's story and saves you time and money.

3 Ways Great Scouting Elevates Your Video:

Brand Credibility: The location instantly validates your business. We find settings (across Vancouver, the Tri-Cities, and the Lower Mainland) that visually affirm your brand's quality and mission.

Logistical Control: We assess light, acoustics, and power before we film, eliminating headaches and expensive re-shoots caused by noisy environments or bad light.

Local Authenticity: We use our local knowledge to find hidden, unique settings that make your commercial feel genuine and connect deeply with your audience.

Don't settle for a generic set. Go rogue with Roguescots.

Lighting is the secret ingredient that transforms ordinary footage into captivating visuals. As videographers dedicated to storytelling, we know that proper lighting can set the mood, highlight details, and elevate your project's professionalism.

Lighting isn't just about brightness; it's about control and creativity. Natural light offers a soft, authentic glow ideal for outdoor shoots, while artificial setups allow precision in controlled environments. For example, three-point lighting—key light for main illumination, fill light to soften shadows, and back light for depth—creates dimension and prevents flat, unengaging shots.

In one of our recent corporate videos, we used LED panels and diffusers to mimic golden-hour sunlight indoors, making a staff interaction feel dynamic and inviting. This technique not only drew viewer attention but also aligned with the client's brand aesthetic, resulting in a video that boosted engagement across social media.

Beginners can start with affordable gear like ring lights or softboxes, experimenting with angles to avoid harsh shadows. Always scout your location's light conditions and use reflectors to bounce light where needed. Post-production tools in software like DaVinci Resolve can fine-tune exposure, but getting it right on set saves time and preserves quality.

At Roguescots, we bring expert lighting knowledge to every project, ensuring your videos shine. From events to promotions, let us illuminate your story. Let’s collaborate on your next video masterpiece.

Call or text 604-729-3944 or email [email protected] to chat about your next video production project!

We started filming with the Langley Ukulele Ensemble three years ago, and what began as video documentation of the organization’s activities quickly developed into a much more nuanced endeavour. There was a story waiting to be told, a through-line interweaving the experiences of the players, educators, and their audiences alike. The project has since evolved into a full feature documentary, and this weekend’s inaugural Fort Langley International Ukulele Festival marked the penultimate sequence of the filming process—a chance to bridge the Pacific and capture the rhythms that connect Langley and Honolulu. We were fortunate to have Jay Durant of Global BC join us this past week to highlight the aloha spirit that makes the ukulele so special, touching on indigenous connections, musical legacy, and a cinematic odyssey in the making. Our working title for this doc is “The Ukulele Diaries”, and we can’t wait to film the last few puzzle pieces that will bring it all together. Our thanks to Peter Luongo and the Luongo family for bringing us along this journey. It’s been a beautiful process of discovery and artistic exchange. It’s been a privilege to feel like we’re part of the ohana. 🌺

It’s a milestone birthday today for the enigmatic legend that is Tommy Wiseau (if the internet is to be trusted, that is… 👀). We won’t assign a number to this year’s festivities, but we sure did have a great time filming with him during the making of the ‘Best F(r)iends’ films. Here’s some fun shots we took high on a cliff in Malibu once upon a time. Happy Birthday, Tommy! May this next tour around the Sun be a “high mark” for you. Wishing you all the best! 🎉

Be sure to tune in to Global BC TONIGHT 📺 for a special story on the Fort Langley Ukulele Festival and a little nod to the feature documentary we’ve been making with the Langley Ukulele Ensemble these past few years. Thanks to Jay Durant for shining a light on this awesome event (and including us!). Shoutout to Halau Hula Ka'Uhane O Ka Pakipika’s Jessica Demos, and of course, the inimitable Peter Luongo, whose decades of musical stewardship made this event possible. Our thanks to Brandon Harvey, as well, for his generous assistance covering the festival with us these past few days. Congrats to all involved in the festival’s inaugural kickoff—a rousing success! The aloha spirit was alive and well! 🌺

Roots...

Our mission is to create next-level creative content. From film to the page, we seek to enliven palettes and to deliver a degree of aesthetic to our subjects not elsewhere found.

Roguescots was founded in the summer of 2015 as a creative-collective between brothers. It serves as a platform to bring ideas to life both on-screen and on the page. Through in-house production, alliances, and partnerships with others, Roguescots primary drive is to deliver exceptional content across a spectrum of mediums and to endeavour to tell stories heretofore untold.

Justin has been making films since he was a child. After enrolling into film school in Vancouver, Canada, he realized he was already ahead of the curve. At the advice of his film department’s head, he dropped out to pursue his own projects. Cashing out the education fund his parents had saved for him, he funded his first independent feature, The Generations, which garnered him further work in music videos, short film, documentary and commercial work. His body of film brought him to the attention of Greg Sestero, of The Room fame, who asked Justin to direct his on-screen reunion with Tommy Wiseau, Best F(r)iends, which will release in the spring of 2018.

Kristopher has always been rooted in creativity, dabbling in the performing arts and writing, but had never taken it up in a professional sense. In 2015, he quit his job in banking to become Justin’s full-time producer, and the two have been working together ever since. Under the egis of Roguescots, Kristopher has served as producer, and written three novels. He joined the Best F(r)iends team along with Justin, as co-producer.
