FEAR THE CRITIC - APRIL 2026
At the Gates - The Ghost of a Future Dead - Apr 24
I'll admit I was a little late to At the Gates. I found Slaughter of the Soul when I was in my twenties but melodic death metal, particularly what was coming out of Sweden (In Flames, Soilwork, The Haunted - which I didn't know was former after the dissolution of AtG, these were pre-internet days), was a massive part of my development as a metalhead and still informs a lot of my tastes to this day.
I was lucky enough to see them perform only once, playing at the Commodore Ballroom with Wolves in the Throne Room and Behemoth. It must've been in 2018 some time, I'm pretty sure To Drink From the Night Itself had just recently been released. They put on a stellar performance and I still think about it every so often.
Of course, I can't do a proper review of this album without mentioning the tragic passing of Tomas "Tompa" Lindberg - I'm not a regular viewer but I do occasionally like to watch Ola Englund's YouTube channel and I distinctly remember him passing on the news that Tompa had gone into the studio to record vocals for the new At the Gates record THE DAY before going in for major surgery to treat the adenoid cystic carcinoma he had been diagnosed with. A disease which ultimately took his life.
His influence is felt throughout the metal community and as I write this I feel myself getting emotional (once again) at the loss of this great figure and ambassador for our culture.
I don't want this to overshadow the review of the record because even if he had survived this record would still be remarkable. All these years into their career, a dissolution and a reunion.
For me, this is the strongest of their post-reunion records. The songwriting is tight and memorable. Tompa's lyrics are sharp and poignant. It's a shame we'll never see the songs performed live but that's how things go sometimes.
Four rounds of "f**k cancer" out of five.
RIP Tompa
