In our docuseries, THE CONVERSATION, each character intimately reflects on the circumstances behind their substance use and how it eventually took over their lives. Through coffee, tears, and sometimes humour, each episode gives voice to addiction, as well as the strength and courage it takes to choose healing.

This photo was taken from our launch event earlier this year. We are so grateful that Malcolm, Jay, Alexis and Ryan trusted us with their stories and reflections.

Communities across Canada continue to grapple with the toxic drug crisis and rising mental health challenges. Our docuseries, THE CONVERSATION, offers an empowering look at how healing can come in many forms.

“With toxic drug poisoning deaths still climbing and the crisis disproportionately affecting Indigenous people, THE CONVERSATION brings together survivors, families, and support workers for honest, unfiltered discussions about addiction, trauma, and healing,” said series host Dr. Evan Adams.

Healing means stopping the cycle of intergenerational trauma. THE CONVERSATION presents four one-hour documentaries that each follow substance use survivors through a deeply personal journey.

"There are many pathways to healing and recovery,” said Dr. Nel Wieman, Chief Medical Officer at First Nations Health Authority (FNHA), a co-funder of the series. “The FNHA supports culturally safe, community-led approaches to healing that respect the self-determination of First Nations people who may be impacted by the toxic drug public health emergency. THE CONVERSATION offers hope for families who are navigating the challenges of this emergency, while honouring First Nations stories and voices.”

"My whole family has struggled with addiction for forever. My sister, she overdosed in Gastown, at two in the afternoon. The fact that no one was there at two in the afternoon--no one was there with Naloxone baffles me. People are around everywhere. What do you mean? But no, she just happened to be one of the forgotten ones. And people didn't check up on her fast enough and she passed away," said Alexis.

Intergenerational trauma can manifest in many ways, including addiction. Today, Alexis is channeling her pain and experiences into music as hip hop artist. Music became her pathway to healing.

Our docuseries, THE CONVERSATION, features the stories of substance use survivors and their pathway to healing. The series creates space for honest, often painful, but ultimately healing conversations.

Each episode offers a real-time portrait of a person navigating life after addiction—from aging out of foster care to breaking cycles of incarceration and homelessness. Family members, friends, and front-line service workers join the storytelling, showing the strength of support systems and the impact of culturally-safe informed care.

Dr. Evan Adams is the host of our docuseries, THE CONVERSATION. His commitment to equity and safety brought critical insight into the stories of substance use survivors in each of our 4 episodes.

“Mental health and substance use are deeply connected, and far too often misunderstood. These stories reflect what many families are experiencing right now—and offer a path forward," said Dr. Adams.

For Indigenous people in Canada, colonialism has been a major source of intergenerational trauma. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission states, “Many students who spoke to the Commission said they developed addictions as a means of coping” with the traumatic events they experienced.

Connecting to culture is one of the pathways to healing. Braiding, for example, is a practice that celebrates Indigenous strength, wisdom, identity, and a deep connection to ancestors and the land.

"While I was in that treatment center, one of the support staff lined me up an entry-level position at a bike store where I started off just sweeping floors and putting little kids' bikes together, and fixing flat tires," said Jay. "And I started to ride my bicycle. I started to not knowingly work through some of that trauma in a physical way."

Trauma lives in the body, and engaging in sports and physical activities can help towards healing. If you need emotional support or are looking for information on mental health resources or services, call the KUU-US Crisis Line at 1-800-588-8717 to get culturally safe support services for Indigenous people.

"Most people when they first clean up, they want to help others clean up, and so you get that rush of wanting to get back--give back through working for an addiction non-profit organization or working in the field from the people that helped you. That's a really natural progression," said Ryan. "Through everything that I went through personally doing this kind of work resonated more with who I became after I sobered up this last time."

Ryan had a successful career but behind closed doors, he was struggling with addiction. Today, he is a celebrated speaker who shares his personal journey towards healing.

"We're at the Mustard Seed Recovery Home. It's a Christian based recovery house where I found myself residing to better understand my recovery. There's about, I don't know, 15 of us in here at the moment," said Malcolm. "This is my room here. I basically started out with nothing when I got here. I got here with a set of clothes and jail shoes. I was scared."

Malcolm struggled with substance use and homelessness for years before finding his pathway to healing. He is working on the chapter of his life, with the goal of reuniting with his kids.

"So I feel like a lot of my rebellion was just trying to figure out not only being a girl, but also a really bad time in my life where I felt completely abandoned," recalled Alexis. "I wanted to make friends and stuff. And even though my dad got me out of foster care when I was two, when I was a teenager going back into high school, because we were having those issues, my dad put me in voluntary care so he could have help."

Alexis began using substances to cope with her family circumstances and the bullying she was experiencing at school increased. The malicious rumours and gossip became so severe that she was taken from her dad and voluntary care into foster care when she was 13 years old.

FIND OUT how she survived the toughest moments of her life in THE CONVERSATION. Now available on TELUS Optik channel 8 (BC & AB) and streaming for free on our website, pathwaystohealing.tv
