MABC proudly sponsored Resource Works ‘Get it Done BC’ gathering in Victoria today as part of the 2025 UBCM convention.

Tim McEwan, Mining Association of BC opened the ‘BC Mining: Securing BC’s Economic Future’ panel with some big numbers, demonstrating the economic opportunities 27 mining projects can generate for British Columbians.

In his overview of FPX Nickel Corp. Martin Turenne outlined the economic benefits eagerly anticipated from the Baptiste Nickel project – slated to be one of the tenth largest nickel operations in the world.

Job creation would be substantial at 1,100 full time jobs over the lifetime of the mine, located 90km northwest of Fort St. James in BC’s Central Interior.

BC Premier DDavid Ebyarticulated the direct connection between mining and our province’s economic prosperity during the ‘start of construction’ celebration at TTecks Highland Valley Copper Mine Life Extension Project (HVC MLE).

Teck’s HVC MLE is the largest critical minerals investment in BC’s history and one of the largest ever in Canada. Extending the life of this important copper mine will create 2,900 construction jobs, support 1,500 direct jobs, and contribute $500M to our annual GDP.

The premier is bang on: mining supports economic growth and prosperity in every corner of our province and provides needed tax revenue to support vital public services. And each direct job at a mine or smelter supports at least two supply or services jobs in BC – many are located in Metro Vancouver.

HVC MLE is one of several BC mining projects that will help secure our province’s economic future.

Earlier today, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the first five nation building projects that are in Canada’s national interest.

MABC was very pleased to see Newmont Canada's Red Chris Block Cave Project on the initial list. Well done to the full team, we look forward to seeing all the economic benefits this project will bring to BC and Canada come to life!

Critical minerals offer British Columbians a generational economic opportunity.

Newmont Canada is developing the Red Chris Block Cave Project, approximately 80 km south of Dease Lake, within Tahltan Territory. The Project will produce gold and copper – the electrification metal indispensable to clean technologies and fighting climate change.

The Red Chris Block Cave Project will secure jobs, service and supply opportunities and significant economic benefits for Tahltans and northern British Columbians for decades, while making a positive contribution to the global energy transition.

“Far from being a sunset industry, mining is a sunrise industry that partners with First Nations.”

This was just one insight shared today during the West Coast Forward Summit, where industry and Indigenous leaders came together to discuss Indigenous engagement in BC mining projects.

Knowledgeable industry leaders shared their experiences on what is being done in the mining sector to advance economic, community, and social prosperity for First Nations and industry alike.

Taryn Cutler, Seabridge Gold Inc.; Jessica Saunders, Artemis Gold Inc l Blackwater Mine; and Freda Campbell, MBA, Tatl’ah Training & Engagement /Owner/Operator – Indigeweb Canada shared insights on what works (and doesn’t) when it comes to genuine, long-lasting partnerships between First Nations and mining companies. Key points included:
☑️ Importance of co-design, collaboration, and partnerships from the outset
☑️ Training and development of youth and capacity funding
☑️ Understanding what matters most to nations and building genuine relationships in the community.

Tim McEwan, Mining Association of BC emphasized the economic potential that 27 proposed mining projects presents, focusing on the opportunities for indigenous affiliated procurement, youth training, and job creation overall. He emphasized the importance of First Nations engagement with authenticity and respect.

Moderator Mieke Vink , one-eighty consulting group, closed the discussion by asking panelists about the most exciting opportunities for integration of indigenous values in mining. It was uplifting to hear these hopes for BC’s mining industry:
🍁 Putting Canada on the map as a global industry leaders when it comes to indigenous engagement and mining projects.
💰 Creating real economic and procurement opportunities for local communities, seeing First Nations undertaking leadership roles.
⛏️ 27 potential mining projects presents one of the largest opportunities in decades for British Columbians in all corners of the province.
