“Far from being a sunset industry, mining is a sunrise industry that partners with First Nations.”
This was just one insight shared today during the West Coast Forward Summit, where industry and Indigenous leaders came together to discuss Indigenous engagement in BC mining projects.
Knowledgeable industry leaders shared their experiences on what is being done in the mining sector to advance economic, community, and social prosperity for First Nations and industry alike.
Taryn Cutler, Seabridge Gold Inc.; Jessica Saunders, Artemis Gold Inc l Blackwater Mine; and Freda Campbell, MBA, Tatl’ah Training & Engagement /Owner/Operator – Indigeweb Canada shared insights on what works (and doesn’t) when it comes to genuine, long-lasting partnerships between First Nations and mining companies. Key points included:
☑️ Importance of co-design, collaboration, and partnerships from the outset
☑️ Training and development of youth and capacity funding
☑️ Understanding what matters most to nations and building genuine relationships in the community.
Tim McEwan, Mining Association of BC emphasized the economic potential that 27 proposed mining projects presents, focusing on the opportunities for indigenous affiliated procurement, youth training, and job creation overall. He emphasized the importance of First Nations engagement with authenticity and respect.
Moderator Mieke Vink , one-eighty consulting group, closed the discussion by asking panelists about the most exciting opportunities for integration of indigenous values in mining. It was uplifting to hear these hopes for BC’s mining industry:
🍁 Putting Canada on the map as a global industry leaders when it comes to indigenous engagement and mining projects.
💰 Creating real economic and procurement opportunities for local communities, seeing First Nations undertaking leadership roles.
