Jake DeBrusk’s name is circulating in trade talks and the Vancouver Canucks are not ruling anything out, with insider David Pagnotta saying Monday that moving DeBrusk remains the long-term plan for both sides. The 23-goal winger closed the season on a strong note with seven goals in his final 10 games and four goals in his last five, which complicates Vancouver’s asking price and makes a sell-low scenario harder to justify. Pagnotta admitted nobody around the league is totally sure what the Canucks want back, saying if they find the right deal they will pull the trigger on it. With Manny Malhotra taking over as head coach and the rebuild fully underway, DeBrusk at $5.5 million per season is one of the more movable veterans on the roster and the front office appears to be waiting for the market to come to them.

Vancouver’s Granville Street pedestrian zone officially closed on Labour Day after 89 days of car-free programming that started with the FIFA World Cup and cost the city nearly $5 million to extend through the summer. The five-block stretch from Georgia to Davie drew crowds of locals and tourists throughout the summer despite Granville Street facing significant challenges, with one in four storefronts on the strip currently sitting empty. City councillors and the Downtown Vancouver Business Improvement Association are already calling for the zone to return next summer, with councillor Lisa Dominato saying the city envisions potentially making it year-round longer term and noting costs should decrease as the city gains more experience running it. Former city planner Brent Toderian called the summer a proof of concept that a pedestrianized Granville Street can work without the World Cup, pointing to a popup DJ performance that drew thousands and Whitecaps fan gatherings as examples of what the street can become.

Chip Wilson, the Vancouver billionaire who founded Lululemon in 1998, and his wife Shannon Summer Wilson are divorcing after 20 years of marriage with no prenuptial agreement in place to govern the division of their estimated $6.1 billion in assets. The split could have real consequences for Lululemon shareholders given that Chip Wilson holds around 8.6 per cent of the company’s shares worth close to $1 billion, while Summer Wilson holds a one per cent stake, and an equal division of assets could shake up the ownership structure. Wilson’s wealth also includes roughly 18 per cent of Amer Sports, the Finnish company that owns Arc’teryx, worth nearly $3 billion, plus an extensive real estate portfolio including one of BC’s most expensive homes. Lululemon shares dropped nearly 20 per cent on Friday to their lowest point since 2018 following news of the divorce filing in BC Supreme Court.

It is easy to look at the Quinn Hughes trade as the moment Vancouver lost its franchise defenceman and wonder what management was thinking, but the pieces coming back the other way are starting to tell a very different story. Zeev Buium just signed an eight-year $9.38 million per season extension at just 20 years old, giving the Canucks a cornerstone defenceman to build around for the next decade, and Tom Willander is developing alongside him as another potential long-term piece on the blue line. Beyond defence, Liam Ohgren, Jonathan Lekkerimaki, Braeden Cootes, Caleb Malhotra and Adam Novotny are all moving through the organization at roughly the same time, giving Vancouver a depth of young talent it has not had in years. GM Ryan Johnson is not just building a roster, he is building a culture, and the Hughes trade may eventually be remembered not as the day Vancouver lost its identity but as the day they made room for the next one.

The Vancouver Canucks have signed 20-year-old defenceman Zeev Buium to an eight-year contract extension worth $9.38 million US per season, locking in one of the cornerstones of their rebuild for the long term. Buium was acquired from the Minnesota Wild in December as the centrepiece of the blockbuster Quinn Hughes trade and posted three goals and nine assists in 45 games with Vancouver last season. The San Diego native was selected 12th overall by Minnesota in the 2024 NHL Draft and has won gold with the United States at the world under-18 championship, back to back world junior championships and the 2025 world championship. At just 20 years old and already signed through his prime years, Buium is shaping up to be a key piece of the Canucks blue line for the next decade.

Vancouver’s beloved Earnest Ice Cream is opening its fifth location on Granville Island in Fall 2026, marking the first new shop the brand has opened in nearly 10 years. Founded in 2013 on Fraser Street, Earnest has since expanded to Olympic Village, Strathcona and North Vancouver, with co-founder Erica Bernardi saying this could be their last location and they wanted it to feel really special. The team says they only open in neighbourhoods where they actually want to spend time and Granville Island checked every box both practically and in terms of community feel.

The Bank of Canada just unveiled a redesigned $20 bill dropping in February 2027 and it is a big departure from what Canadians are used to. King Charles III appears on Canadian currency for the first time replacing Queen Elizabeth II, the bill is now vertical instead of horizontal, and the back features the Canadian National Vimy Memorial. Security features include a holographic purple strip and a 3D bubble, while Indigenous plants like wild strawberries symbolizing reconciliation and Arctic cotton representing the Inuit are woven into the design.
