After exploring the historical and ongoing housing experiences of Indigenous women, Two-Spirit, and gender-diverse people in previous episodes, She They Us turns to settler women, beginning with White women in Season 3, Episode 3.

While often positioned as beneficiaries of Canada’s economic and housing systems, White women have also faced structural constraints, exclusion, and gendered assumptions that shaped their access to land, loans, mortgages, and stability.

Has the system ever truly worked for women?

For two nights in a row Vancouver newscaster Chris Gailus felt a chill go through his body, like you get when you’re sick, and he couldn’t stop shaking. Both times he went to bed and woke up with a sharp pain, unable to breathe. Those were embolisms transiting into his lungs. Either one could have been fatal.

Nothing resets the way you view the world like a close call or a brush with devastation.

Community is just as important to what makes a place a home as the people in it. This episode of She They Us, a podcast by the Pan-Canadian Voice for Women’s Housing, reminds us that housing is not just physical.

Since settlers arrived, finding safe and secure housing for First Nations, Métis, and Inuit households has never been straightforward. Host Andrea Reimer speaks with an urban Indigenous woman and Sixties Scoop survivor who opens up about what it was like to grow up displaced, move through the foster care system, survive addiction, and fight her way back to her children.

Then, Andrea speaks with a Métis and Two-Spirit person whose story spans seven provinces and a lifetime of relocations shaped by survival, relationships, cultural identity, and the search for a place that truly feels like home.

Evicted from her family home on reserve to fighting through multiple levels of court, only to be ordered off her own homeland... but this is not a story of despair.

Welcome back to She They Us: a podcast by the Pan-Canadian Voice for Women's Housing! In the Season 3 opener, host Andrea Reimer speaks with Marie McGregor Pitawanakwat, an Anishinaabe kwe and head of the National Indigenous Women’s Housing Network. Marie invites us to imagine something different: Indigenous women and gender-diverse people reclaiming their role as home-builders.

There is a true need to fight for housing justice. Listen to her story in Season 3, Episode 1: “We Are Matriarchs” at https://pcvwh.ca/podcast/ or wherever you get your podcasts!
