Don't confuse what’s easiest to see (dancing) with what’s actually happening.

When I walk into a room, I’m paying attention to the conversations, attention, movement, relationships, timing and hundreds of tiny signals happening at once.

Because the "vibe" isn’t something the DJ, planner, venue, decor or entertainment simply provides.

Everyone in the room is contributing to what that "vibe" is.

I keep thinking about how much extraordinary stuff we consume while barely moving a thumb.

Places we’ve never visited. Performances we’ve never attended. Food we’ve never tasted. People we’ve never met.

We’ve seen all of it.
Or have we?

Working in live events has made me wonder whether unlimited access to seeing things through screens has quietly changed our capacity to experience them.

Next time you’re somewhere in person, notice what gets your attention and what you’ve automated yourself to scroll past even when there’s no screen in your hand.

There are decisions guests will never know were made.
Volume and music changed because the client requested it.
A cue moved because the timing felt wrong.
Original location changed because the venue double booked those rooms.
A technical problem got solved before anyone knew there was one.
The emcee noticed the energy dropping and adjusted. DJ knew when to push - and when to leave the moment alone.
I’ve spent a lot of my career operating on both sides of the curtain, moving between the part of an event people see and the part they don’t: DJ, music director, producer, show caller, technical director, talent manager.
And the longer I do this, the more I want to shed light on what an audience experiences out front is the result of a LOT of invisible judgement backstage.
The audience gets moments.
They don’t see the machinery that made it possible.

Sending the file ≠ sending a show-ready file. Getting performance music in advance isn't just about giving the DJ or AV techs time to download it. It gives us time to open it, listen to it, test it and discover whatever fresh hell might be hiding inside it. 😂

Apparently it's film festival season, so I should probably mention that I made a short film once. 😂.

It started as a music video, somehow became a 50-person production and was inspired by years of watching as a DJ and guest what actually happens at weddings.

"Overplayed" describes how often you've heard it. "Popular" describes how many people know it. Sometimes they describe the same song. Put 200 people with different musical histories in one room and the overlap gets surprisingly small. The songs in that overlap aren't necessarily everyone's favourites - they're often simply the ones enough people can participate in together. Familiarity can be common ground to connect to other human beings.
