Welcome to our newest acquisitions editor, Shalini Nanayakkara!

Shalini brings a sales perspective to editorial work, having started in the UBC Press marketing department in 2022. She enjoys supporting scholarship that bring fresh perspectives. Being a q***r South Asian woman with ADHD and a chronic illness, she bears a personal connection to her subject areas and offers safe space and understanding to help authors publish their best scholarship.

Shalini is accepting book proposals in Asian Studies, Disability Studies, and Gender and Sexuality Studies, as well as books suitable for our On Campus imprint.

On Tuesday, our director, Douglas Hildebrand, presented the K.D. Srivastava Prize for Excellence in Scholarly Publishing to Robert Gibbs for “What Could a University Be? Revolutionary Ideas for the Future.” Congratulations, Dr. Gibbs! 🎉

The K.D. Srivastava Prize is given annually by UBC Press and the Office of the Vice-President Research and Innovation. To be eligible for the prize, the author must have completed a substantial portion of their work at the University of British Columbia.

This upcoming event, “What Could a University Be?”, brings together senior academic leaders and scholars to examine the future of higher education in Canada amid growing pressures around AI, public trust, accessibility, governance, interdisciplinarity, and the civic role of universities.

The conversation features participants from UBC, the University of Victoria, and the University of Toronto, and will explore how universities are adapting to changing social expectations and institutional realities.
