We hiked up to Colchuck Lake and then up the imposing Asgard Pass escarpment to get into the Enchantments. Since we were lucky enough to have camping passes for the core Enchantments, we had our pick of camp sites, and chose a spot in a larch grove in the Upper Enchantments overlooking Spirit Lake. The next morning the dawn light was beautifully soft and golden, and I wandered the rocky terrain for photo opportunities. I was close to wrapping it up for the morning to head back to my camp to get breakfast and coffee when I saw this sapling growing seemingly out of a granite boulder alongside one of the smaller streams flowing over the rocks. Because larches are hardy pioneers I liked the image of the large appearing to grow from solid rock, because it shows the tree's ability to grow in the most unlikely places in harsh environments.
