🇨🇦🛡️ Canada is expanding its defence commitments.

The federal government says Canada is working toward investing **5% of GDP in defence by 2035** while strengthening the Canadian Armed Forces and meeting its NATO commitments.

Key initiatives announced include:

🛰️ Extending Operation REASSURANCE through 2031 and expanding Canada's presence on NATO's eastern flank.
❄️ Investing in Arctic satellite communications, Joint Strike Missiles, and new military equipment.
🇺🇦 Providing additional military assistance to Ukraine, including am******on, Canadian-made armoured vehicles, and other critical equipment.
🤝 Expanding defence and economic cooperation with NATO allies, including new agreements and negotiations with countries such as Germany and Türkiye.

Supporters say these investments are essential for national security, Arctic sovereignty, and supporting allies. Critics question the long-term cost and whether increased defence spending should take priority over domestic needs.

The case is expected to continue through the Alberta court system, with further developments anticipated in the coming months.

✈️🇨🇦 Another manufacturing plant is preparing to close in Ontario.

Woodward Inc. has announced it will shut down its Peterborough aerospace facility by August 2027, with production moving to Kraków, Poland. The decision is expected to affect approximately 165 local jobs.

The company says the move is part of its long-term strategy to align production with market demand and financial objectives. The Peterborough plant currently manufactures specialized electromechanical systems for the aerospace industry, with production set to be phased out over the next year before transitioning to Woodward's European operations.

The announcement has drawn attention because it comes months after federal officials highlighted the facility as part of Canada's aerospace sector during a visit in late 2025. While some view the closure as another example of manufacturing jobs leaving Canada, others note that multinational companies often restructure operations based on global business considerations.

🤔 What do you think?

👍 Canada needs stronger policies to keep manufacturing jobs here
❤️ Companies should be free to relocate based on business needs

⏰🇨🇦 Could Ontario finally stop changing the clocks?

A new bill passed by the U.S. House of Representatives could move the United States one step closer to making daylight saving time permanent.

If the proposal also passes the U.S. Senate and becomes law, it could clear the way for Ontario to move ahead with its own plan to end the twice-yearly clock changes.

For Toronto, that would likely mean staying one hour ahead year-round, bringing later winter sunsets—but also darker mornings.

Nothing has changed yet, and Ontarians will continue switching their clocks until any new legislation is officially adopted.

🤔 What would you prefer?

👍 Keep daylight saving time all year
❤️ Keep standard time all year

🍄🇨🇦 New U.S. tariffs could put pressure on Canada's mushroom industry.

The United States has proposed preliminary antidumping duties on most fresh mushrooms imported from Canada, with rates varying by producer. These would be added to the preliminary countervailing duties announced earlier this year over alleged government subsidies.

Canada exported nearly 70 million kilograms of fresh mushrooms—worth approximately US$350 million—to the U.S. in 2024, making the American market a vital destination for Canadian growers.

The proposed duties are not yet final, with a final decision currently expected on September 29 unless the timeline changes.

Supporters of the U.S. action argue the measures protect domestic producers from unfair competition. Critics say the duties could disrupt an integrated North American food supply chain and increase costs for businesses and consumers on both sides of the border.

🤔 Do you think these proposed tariffs will hurt Canadian farmers?

👍 YES
❤️ NO

✈️🇨🇦 Canada is taking a closer look at the future of military aviation.

Canada is expected to join the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP) as an observer, giving Ottawa the opportunity to evaluate the next-generation fighter project being developed by the United Kingdom, Italy, and Japan.

Observer status would allow Canada to assess the program's technology, costs, and industrial opportunities before deciding whether to pursue deeper involvement or consider the aircraft in the future.

Meanwhile, Canada's F-35 acquisition remains on track, with 88 aircraft planned through 2032 and the first Canadian-based jets expected to arrive at CFB Cold Lake in 2028.

Supporters say exploring multiple defence partnerships strengthens Canada's long-term security and aerospace industry. Others believe Canada should stay focused on its existing F-35 program before considering additional commitments.

🤔 Do you support Canada exploring future fighter partnerships like GCAP?

👍 YES
