Dementia is often seen as the most feared disease of later life—not only because of memory loss, but also because it slowly alters identity, relationships, and dignity. For Black older adults in British Columbia, dementia is not only a medical condition; it is experienced within systems shaped by racism, cultural misunderstanding, and invisibility.

That invisibility isn’t just a coincidence.
It reflects historical patterns of exclusion in healthcare, data collection, and policy.

Thanks, Alliance for Health, Wellness & Aging Society (HAHWAS), for organizing this event to advance health equity for Black older adults in BC.

Black History Month is here. Know What You Are Wearing is a guide for Black youth and community leaders to discover the rich cultural meanings of Adinkra symbols.

This book translates those symbols into life lessons: daily affirmations and reflections that build confidence , and activities like Sankofa puzzles (Sankofa means “go back and fetch it” ) that root young people in heritage. Embracing such cultural grounding “builds confidence” among Black youth .

Educators, cultural organizations and diaspora groups: make this resource part of your Black History Month programming.

When is a Client not a Client?

It is helpful to understand that not everyone called a client is a client. According to Graybeal (2001), knowing who you are meeting with can significantly change both the experience and the outcome of the assessment process. For instance, perceiving someone as a target completely changes the socially constructed meaning of the interaction as well as the expectations that come with it.
