Milky Way Picture Books is positively roaring with excitement over our newest book deal with artist Fatima Ordinola (Where is Bear?; Our Dreams, Our Love) for 🦁 WHAT ARE YOU THINKING, LION?, scheduled for publication in 2027!

Ordinola was represented by Susan Penny from The Bright Agency in the deal.

At the heart of this comforting story, a lion drifts between reality and his thoughts, sharing his wishes, memories, and dreams for the future with a few friends, both imaginary and real. We’ll have more to share with you on this new title soon!

"New paths can offer welcome challenges.

A small, pale-skinned child surveys diverging routes in a strange, stylized forest that sprawls across a borderless double-page spread, where some trees look like giant leaves and little animals perch or run. While journeying, the narrator resolves to “sing and hum and smile” and asks, “Why not enjoy each moment, big and small?” A hill is to climb bravely, “like the mountain goats”; a stumble means picking oneself up and going on. At a fork in the road, the child decides to “listen to my heart.” A tree offers shelter for a nap; ants provide a model of strength. Deep breathing soothes the child after getting lost; patience anchors the youngster during a sudden storm. To deal with loneliness, the child “imagine[s] that we’re all under the same stars.” The tiny traveler’s hooded teal cloak flares out like a skirt, but there are really no gender markers here. The art, in saturated greens and oxide reds, is both sophisticated in proportions and simple in design. The graceful, accessible text pairs hypotheticals (“If I return home”) and rhetorical questions for a philosophical tone that escapes hectoring, using an analogy to life events that is transparent but not tedious.

Comme des géants evolves into Comme des géants Group as Milky Way Picture Books celebrates five years! 🎂🎂🎂🎂🎂

Launched in February 2021, Milky Way Picture Books was born out of a desire to broaden dialogues between cultures and children's book creators, and to offer picture books of great visual and literary richness to English markets. The new Groupe Comme des géants formation will more closely align Milky Way’s editorial line with our two original French-language imprints — Comme des géants and Le Lièvre de Mars — under one umbrella.

Milky Way’s fifth anniversary is an opportunity for us to celebrate the work of our creators and partners throughout Groupe Comme des géants, but also to reaffirm our mission.

✊ We will continue to contribute to the heritage of children's literature worldwide by bringing the voices and imaginations of Québecois, Canadian, and international creators to a global readership — through publishing standards far removed from anything considered “mass market” or "novelty,” through our commitment to bibliodiversity, and through our desire to promote the circulation of picture books.
