For the first time in human history, astronauts aboard the Artemis II have captured the full view of the Moonβs elusive Orientale Basin from the Orion spacecraftβa breathtaking milestone in deep-space exploration.
Spanning nearly 600 miles, the Orientale Basin is a massive, multi-ringed impact crater formed billions of years ago. Positioned at the edge of the Moonβs near side, it has never been fully visible from Earthβuntil now.
The image, taken at just the right moment, frames the entire basin with Earth glowing in the distanceβtruly a once-in-a-lifetime shot.
As the crew moves behind the Moon, they enter a 40-minute communication blackoutβmarking their journey into the far sideβs silence.
