Episode 8 of Locally Speaking is now Live!

In "A Cello on a Floatplane?", we sit down and have a chat with long-serving MLA Nicholas Simons, representing the riding of Powell River-Sunshine Coast. Having served as MLA for 19 years in both opposition and government, he's currently serving as the NDP caucus chair, and has also spent time as the Minister for Poverty Reduction. We talk about a few of the things he's most proud of over the years, as well as several of the issues that local government and the Province share together.

Episode 6 of Locally Speaking is now live! In it, we continue our exploration of local government communications by sitting down with Aidan Buckley, the Manager of Communications and Engagement at the SCRD. In this episode we talk about some of the ways that local government can use social media as a tool for good, and some of the ways governments can engage with their citizens. Beyond that, we also consider the question.....does local government belong on Tik Tok?

Listen below for the answer to that question, or find us on linktr.ee/locallyspeaking to learn how you can support the show!

We've got a couple social updates to share while we work on the next episode to drop (scheduled this coming week, by the way):

First, we're starting to share our podcast over on our YouTube channel. The idea is that you can listen to the intro from the show, and clips as we decide to extract and publish them. You can also get notified through the YouTube platform that episodes are available. Our shorter episodes will be published on there in full, such as episode zero: https://youtu.be/WB9npiAJd7Q

Second, we're using LinkTree to make for easy sharing of our podcast, and socials, and enabling people to be able to contact us or show their support for the show. You'll see linktr.ee/locallyspeaking showing up more, as well as forming the basis for our promotional materials.

Thank you so much for your continued support of our podcast! We have lightly penciled in topics for most of the rest of this year, but as always, if you have suggestions, comment below or email us at [email protected]

Episode Four is live and can be listened to everywhere you consume your podcasts! In this week's episode, we tackle transparency. What is it, what makes a government more or less transparent, and come along with us as we realize we're going to need a second episode where we continue this conversation!

In this Episode, we make an attempt to talk through transparency. The word is often bandied about during election campaigns, and everyone -wants- improved transparency, but is it even possible? How can a municipality be all things to all people and still get any work done? We also talk through some....

In Episode Three, Brenda and Alton chat with Sarah Fowler, a Councillor for the Village of Tahsis on Vancouver Island, about some of the challenges of living and governing in a small town. It's not just challenges though, because we also talk about the sense of community that people in small towns develop, and some of the ways BC's municipalities and Regional Districts band together to advocate for change with the Province, through associations like AVICC and UBCM.

Sarah also hosts her own podcast, , and we encourage you to check it out as well.

Episode Two is live! In episode two, Brenda and Alton have a chat with CAO Dean McKinley of the Sunshine Coast Regional District to talk about the post-election transitions of Boards and Councils, what it can mean for staff, and how long a Board might take to make decisions 'without the training wheels', so to speak.

In Episode Two, Brenda and Alton chat with CAO Dean McKinley of the Sunshine Coast Regional District about what post-election transitions look like across British Columbia. In Locally Speaking's first episode, hosts Brenda and Alton chat about the 2022 municipal election, in which they were both re-elected to District of Sechelt Council. They also touch on the low voter turnout all across the Province of British Columbia, and take a bit of a side road to talk about community engagement, and how newly elected Councils and Boards across the Province might come up with ideas to "improve" communications.
