“If elephants didn’t exist, you couldn’t invent one. They belong to a small group of living things so unlikely they challenge credulity and common sense.”
― Lyall Watson

Today is World Elephant Day!
The Emerging Storyteller Fund is World Elephant Day’s new $300,000 initiative to discover, mentor, and amplify young voices across Africa and Asia who are telling powerful, original stories about elephants. By equipping these filmmakers, writers, and artists with training, tools, and a global platform, the Fund helps shift hearts, minds, and policies — ensuring elephants are not just remembered, but protected for generations to come.
Please support this timely and vital initiative.

Elephants, like so many women, embody strength, memory, and leadership. Our campaign this year is grounded in those very values. We are launching a $300,000 Emerging Storyteller Fund to support young female storytellers across Africa and Asia who are using film, poetry, photography, and radio to give voice to the voiceless — elephants and communities alike.

Every group needs a great leader—and in elephant society, that leader is the Matriarch. She is the oldest and wisest female in the herd: the leader, protector, teacher, and keeper of ancestral wisdom.

This World Elephant Day, August 12, help us make a difference. We are at risk of losing not just elephants, but the memory systems they carry — the matriarchs who know ancient migratory routes, who pass on survival skills, who remember where the water lies buried in times of drought. Losing a matriarch is like burning a library. And in a world full of noise, we need new voices. We need storytellers who know the terrain — ecological, cultural, emotional — and who can connect with global audiences in fresh, authentic ways.

The human-elephant conflict is critical. Rapid development, road construction, deforestation, and industrial agriculture have decimated elephant habitats. In India alone, elephants have lost over 80% of their historic range. Migration corridors are blocked by railways, plantations, and towns. In search of food and water, elephants are forced into human settlements — with tragic consequences. As Sateesh Venkatesh explains in this piece, Sri Lanka has adopted a National Action Plan to deal with the problem.

Sri Lanka is facing one of the world’s most acute […]

“Of all African animals, the elephant is the most difficult for man to live with, yet its passing – if this must come – seems the most tragic of all. I can watch elephants (and elephants alone) for hours at a time, for sooner or later the elephant will do something very strange such as mow grass with its toenails or draw the tusks from the rotted carcass of another elephant and carry them off into the bush. There is mystery behind that masked gray visage, and ancient life force, delicate and mighty, awesome and enchanted, commanding the silence ordinarily reserved for mountain peaks, great fires, and the sea.”
― Peter Matthiessen, The Tree Where Man Was Born
